House Democrats vote to deny Trump wall money, defying veto threat
By Erica Werner, Damian Paletta and Seung Min Kim January 3 at 9:55 PM
The newly Democratic-controlled House on Thursday passed legislation that would reopen the federal government without paying for President Trumps border wall, drawing a swift veto threat from the White House and leaving the partial shutdown no closer to getting resolved.
Democrats voted to pass a measure that would provide stopgap funding for the Department of Homeland Security, reopening the department but denying President Trump the more than $5 billion hes demanding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. The Democrats then passed another set of bills that would reopen other federal agencies that have been closed since the partial shutdown began on Dec. 22.
The measures would need support from the Senate and the presidents signature to end the shutdown, but Trump has promised a veto and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) reiterated Thursday that the Senate will only take up government spending legislation that Trump supports.
Despite the broad GOP opposition, two Senate Republicans who are up for reelection in 2020 broke with Trump and party leaders, saying it was time to end the impasse even if Democrats wont approve border funding.

(9,664 posts)2. Maybe Mitch is afraid to have the vote. Maybe many repugs would go rogue and vote to end this. nt

Trump will never admit defeat. Never!
But he can be defeated. He has to be outsmarted and outplayed. They can tack on reopening the government onto another bill and not tell him about it. There are ways.
