we have to deal with reality. All House democrats can do legislatively is take "symbolic" votes unless McConnel AND trump agree with the Bill.

The real AND ONLY POWER Pelosi and democrats have are hearing and investigations...with some opportunity to use appropriation bills ith democratic poison pills in them

She and the Democrats are laying the groundwork for legislation that will enentually pass and reopen the government.

Unlike the Republicans, Pelosi doesn't do symbolism, empty gestures or wheel-spinning. Every step she takes is carefully thought out and part of a plan.

by observing. Many here have now spent their entire adult lives watching Democrats operate as a minority power in a nation that swung majority conservative with the "Reagan revolution" in 1980. It's frustrating to all of us, but we believe the wheel is now turning forward again in spite of all attempts to keep it rolling backward--including by the misuse of conservative power to corrupt our democratic processes for its continuance.

One thing I've noticed is that many fellow liberals, millions of whom had switched to calling themselves "progressive" in the 1990s in an attempt to try to state their positions without being attacked and sneered at in social gatherings, are now proudly calling themselves liberals again. Took 20 years to come back, but that's a huge sign.

Nothing will happen if Pelosi and the Dems do nothing. People didn't elwct a Democratic House to only do investigations. They also want them to legislate. And legislating sometimes means pushing the ball down the field in increments and pressuring the other side to give ground.

Pelosi knows what she's doing and, as i said, she doesn't engage in symbolism or empty posturing. She knows what she's doing and her strategy will result in McConnell giving ground. Wait and see.

and, we need to remind the media every day that what Pelosi passed also passed the senate 100-0 before Christmas. The ball is 100% in McConnell's court, and if other Republicans join Cory Gardner in calling for a vote, McConnell may eventually have to give in...

tRumpublicon supporters will never change, they will support their party. None of her actions has any bearing on them.

Those of us here on DU? Opposite side of the aisle, but for the most part, we will stand and support her and the Democratic Party. These bills have our support, but ultimately make no difference in elections.

That large swath of independent voters in the middle? The same voters that are able to vote for GWB one cycle, Obama the next, and Rump the next? Those are the ones that this will have sway on. Seeing the stubborn jackass in the Whitehouse, the stubborn jackasses in the Senate doing nothing while the House, under Democratic Party leadership is pumping bills out (even if they go nowhere).. THOSE are the ones this will have impact and effect upon.

The committees that will open and lead investigations just formed up yesterday. Sit back and enjoy that ride that's coming.

When it comes to government, there's many kinds of power, and the power to control public perception and opion is a powerful one even if these bills never make it anywhere in the Senate. They're gaining headlines, and people are reading.

All Democrats voted for the 2 end the shutdown bills, 5 Republicans broke ranks and voted with the Democrats for the 1st bill, 7 Republicans broke ranks and voted with the Democrats for the 2nd bill. Chinks are forming in the Republican party who used to vote in lock step.

It will be worse for Republican Senators to toe the line. Senators aren't safe in gerrymandered districts, they are elected state wide. There are more Republican Senators up for reelection in 2020 than Dems.

Oh yeah, of note, one of those Senators up for reelection is our dear friend Susan Collins.

These votes show what party is trying to govern and what party is trying to obstruct.

Fri Jan 4, 2019, 09:54 AM

is a lot different than ignoring bills to restart the government. If the shutdown ends up being lengthy farmers are not going to get loans, we all aren't going to get our tax refunds.

The majority of Americans do not support a wall. You are wrong thinking it is worthwhile for Republicans to hitch their wagons to not reopening the government over a stupid wall.

Is Obamacare repealed? No, it is not.

Yet oddly enough, Patton chose to get bogged down fighting Wehrmacht troops in fixed emplacements during the Vosges campaign in autumn, '44. Got his butt kicked, turned tail and called off that particular offensive.

In fact, she passed the exact same bills that were already approved nearly unanimously either by the full Senate or full Senate committees.

If McConnell doesn't want to vote on his own chambers' legislation, there is not much the House can do about it. However, Cory Gardiner is already cracking and I expect there will be others doing the same shortly.
