If NYT is right that Jim Webb is being considered for Trump's next Defense Secretary, be forewarned that Sen. Webb's 2016 Presidential campaign website is still live, and it is now (I think?) promoting a... uh... Thai gambling operation?

The domain name expired in 2017 and was repurchased at auction by someone else for the residual traffic:

A comprehensive look at the final auction prices, closeouts and more from the auction list posted on November 23, 2017.

If there is an asterisk (*) next to a price, it means that the name was at auction from a private seller (rather than an expiring name) and may have had a reserve. I’m only showing where the price was when the auction ended, but the name may not have sold if a reserve was in place.

webb2016.com Ended with bids $475.00 54

That's the problem with domains with a year built-in.

especially if your name is attached. $10 is like an insurance policy against stupid stuff appearing as if you've indorsed it.

I think Rachel knows this, and is in fact pointing out how stupid they were not to take precautions against this happening.

Most of my work involves the domain name business, and it is surprising when an organization re-brands, lets their old name lapse, and then gets bent out of shape by the often-predictable result of allowing a name with residual traffic to lapse.
