BY SCOTT WONG AND CRISTINA MARCOS - 01/04/19 01:10 PM EST
House Democrats on Friday pushed back on one of their newest colleagues, who attacked President Trump the previous day by vowing to impeach the motherf---r.
The jarring remarks by liberal freshman firebrand Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) put Democrats on the defensive less than 24 hours after they took control of the House, putting a spotlight on the possible impeachment of Trump instead of Democratic efforts to end the government shutdown and the party's legislative priorities.
I have never said that in a public setting. The choice of words is inappropriate, longtime Rep. Lacy Clay (D-Mo.), a member of the Oversight Committee, told The Hill. We should conduct oversight, which is our responsibility, vigorous oversight, because its been lacking the last two years. And I think that we should also wait for Special Counsel [Robert] Muellers report to Congress so we can determine what we need to do.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), who will lead many of Democrats investigations into the Trump administration, also called Tlaibs comments inappropriate.
One of the things that I've said about my committee, I've said that we will reclaim civility," Cummings told reporters in the Capitol. "You cannot accomplish very much of anything unless you have civility and show respect for your colleagues. And I think those kind of comments do not take us in the right direction.

(27,794 posts)I honestly don't think they hear themselves say it. I had to chide a person on a bus coming home from a baseball game for throwing F bombs in front of little kids (four and five years old, maybe) on a bus; to his credit, he did admit he shouldn't have been doing that and stopped.
I was on a plane about a year ago, and two men were having a conversation about work and seriously, about every third word was "f**ker". I actually considered calling the stewardess, but I let it go and I still half regret it. It was excruciating to listen to them four feet away talking like that.
Now, I'm hardly against swearing and I've been known to use a lot of profanity myself, but in some situations, including work, I would not. Like it or not, for Representative Tlaib, she made that remark while she was essentially at work and yes, it's inappropriate to do it in public. Closed door meeting, maybe different, but c'mon! Try to hear what the rest of us hear when you throw that word around.

(27,794 posts)Apparently she was at a private event. The headline I read was misleading.
I still get tired of people throwing F Bombs all.day long in front of kids.

(58,724 posts)Just because kids were put in cages in various presidential administrations (including the current one and the previous one) is not relevant to whether or not it is appropriate for members of Congress to use that language in that context.

No excuses for any administration which allowed this occur.

(658 posts)I seriously doubt the forgotten Americans are all sitting around waiting for someone to be "speaking to" them with profanity.
Why can't you folks who aren't offended by foul language understand the nuance of optics and leadership? We DON'T care if Tlaib says motherfucker ten times in a row to her peers behind closed doors. But in the public limelight, first thing, it would have been prudent to show some solid leadership and, oh I don't know, some imagination. I mean, is fuck, fucker, etc. all we got? Calling for impeachment would not have gotten the same attention had it been said without the profanity. As silly as that may be to YOU, it isn't to everyone. Why play into Trump's hands?
But whatever. This debate has already so beyond jumped the shark. Oh, wait, let me rephrase that so I too can sound like I'm a progressive rebel - the motherfucking shark!!!

And, maybe the press DOES have an agenda - but that's a reality and she needs to adjust to it if she's not going to put her foot in it.

She has to realize that everytime she opens her mouth now, a camera or a microphone will be near, or there will be a person that runs to the Press with what she said.
Be tough, be thorough, but don't distract from that with poorly chosen speech.

(60,536 posts)publish an article you disagree with, is involved in RW nonsense. Why aren't you using your phone to call the quoted Democratic elected officials, demanding they retract their quotes, instead of complaining about a publication printing something you've decided is right-wing elephant dung?

(3,434 posts)....purists--leave that hypocritical hyperbole to evangelical "christian" lying repubs. Today Speaker Pelosi, publicly stood by her colleague...lets do that shall we. Frankly, she is just iterating what many of us are thinking...get this mal [bad, sick evil] hombre out of our WH ; or as she aptly said "impeach the mother f....er" When I read her comment..it ended an already perfect day: Dems in charge of House, Speaker Pelosi at the helm, steller democratic leadership team..her comment was icing on the cake. [Note: of course with all due respect to Rep. Cummings...I usually agree with him--yet, not on this issue.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she wouldnt use Rep. Rashida Tlaibs salty comments about impeaching President Donald Trump, but she also downplayed the episode and noted it was nothing worse than the President has said.

(67,766 posts)She was very low key when speaking about it.
She said it wasn't a big deal.
She said she's not in the censorship business.
She said she had a "generational" reaction to it.
She said she wouldn't use the term, but understood (and respected) those who do.
She said that the words on the President have weight and affect people's lives. Rashida Tlaib's words did no such thing.
I heard no disarray and no controversy in the Democrat's LEADER comments.
But of course rags like The Hill gotta do what they do cuz its what they do when they do shit.
