Just finished watching The Deer Hunter...remember the last scene? After Nick's funeral they go to the diner for BF and booze. Axel is in the kitchen making the eggs and to stop crying he starts humming a tune...then the whole group of friends at the table.. one by one, quietly, tentatively join in "God Bless America"...YES.
(I just got my ending for my January DEM letter.)

...pretty much everyone on the left attacked it, and the ending in particular. They claimed that it amounted to an endorsement of the Vietnam War and a promotion of unquestioning "love it or leave it" patriotism.
