'I'm Pretty Much Broke Right Now': TSA Workers On Edge

BY RHIANNON CORBY, WNYC
ON JAN 4, 2019 4:56 PM

... “It’s hard, because people have bills to pay,” said one officer, who wished to go by only his last name, Watts. “If you got spouses, family, friends that can help you stay aboard until you get your pay, it’s really not too harsh. But everybody is not in that same boat.”

The government shutdown entered its 14th day on Friday, with no end in sight. President Donald Trump has refused to reopen the government without $5 billion to fund the construction of a wall along the US-Mexico border.

Waiting for the Airtrain to JFK on Friday, TSA workers who were willing to speak to a reporter about the shutdown almost unanimously expressed deep anxiety at the lapse in their pay. Many said they were anticipating turning to family or friends for help paying the bills.

Watts, who’s been working at the TSA for about four years, said that his last paycheck came at the end of December. But he hasn’t gotten paid for any work since the government shut down nearly two weeks ago. Watts said he’s been told that he’ll be paid for the hours he’s working — just not right now. “Once the government opens, they say that we get paid back all that money. So we’re not really working for free, but our paychecks are on freeze.” ...

we didn't get paid either. But Banks and Credit Unions all gave us low interest loans. I am sure that Fed employees have the same options.

so few qualify, remember,it is all about CREDIT SCORE and most TSO's are one paycheck from Bankruptcy. The 2013 shutdown nailed that coffin shut.

Washington (CNN) — Hundreds of Transportation Security Administration officers, who are required to work without paychecks through the partial government shutdown, have called out from work this week from at least four major airports, according to two senior agency officials and three TSA employee union officials.
The mass call outs could inevitably mean air travel is less secure, especially as the shutdown enters its second week with no clear end to the political stalemate in sight.

isn't that they got their last paycheck at the end of December, but that the next schedule paycheck isn't to be issued, in any event, until next week.

If they're broke now, they'd be broke now anyway. It's next Thursday or so when they'd see more $ and then the shutdown has teeth. At that point, there's some hardship that they wouldn't be experiencing even without the shutdown.

The next paycheck would probably still be delayed at this point even if all the workers go back on Monday and full funding was authorized.

back pay.. with the MF in charge.. how can you be sure?

I feel so bad for those who aren't getting their paychecks to pay their bills.

It's stupid to #trumpShutDown the Gov and not pay your employees for any reason.
