(82,849 posts)This will be a herculean effort, but the integrity of the country really deserves a full accounting of the crimes of this administration. For all of his fuckery, the articles of impeachment against Nixon sounded pretty anodyne: obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and contempt of Congress. But there was little doubt that Peter Rodino was serious and had the evidence to back up the charges.
Republican support for Nixon was very solid in that summer of 1974. Even though the Saturday Night Massacre had happened nine months earlier, Republicans were standing by their man long after most of the country knew he had to go. Then the support disintegrated when the "smoking gun" tape was released at last that first week of August. There was nowhere else to run, no point in denying any longer. When even Senate Republicans made it clear that they couldn't dissemble anymore, Nixon got started on his resignation address.
Now, Trump is no Nixon, and there aren't many men of conscience in the Republican Senate caucus. But a lot of them are up for re-election in 2020 (though Pat Roberts of Kansas has just announced his decision not to run again in 2020), and some of them are going to be craven enough to put their own re-election ahead of the Emperor Trump's administration. We don't need every man jack of them, just about 20 of them, to go on record that Trump has overstayed his time in office. How does that happen?
Remember that up until yesterday, the discourse has been exclusively in the hands of the Republicans. A LOT of information has been squirreled away from the public that's going to come spilling out over the next weeks and months. Even Fox is going to have trouble making out a positive spin for the revelations that the Republicans have sat on for two years. It won't be easy. It won't happen overnight. But if we keep after it, it will happen, and as patriots, we owe the nation our best effort to excise this festering infection of rank corruption.

(82,849 posts)I'm not nearly diplomatic enough to be in office. People rarely take to being called buttheads.
