This will definitely affect the flying public who we (are) sworn to protect, the president of the TSAs national union, Hydrick Thomas, told CNN.
According to Thomas, over 170 TSA employees have called out sick each day this week at New York Citys John F. Kennedy airport. To cover, morning shift officers were required to work extra hours to cover the gaps without pay.
Another TSA official told the network that at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, employee call outs increased between 200 and 300 percent.
Union officials stress that the absences are not part of an organized action, CNN reported, but believe the number of people calling out will likely increase.
As the shutdown continues, TSA officials expect the call outs to increase.

(34,661 posts)that deal with these issues on a daily basis, you learn damn fast who calls the shots. And if your City has a International Airport, well, you have Secret Service,Marshall Service,TSO's,as well as ICE agents, all not getting paid.

(838 posts)Some of those folks wont be coming back, and the gaps will need to be filled in by new workers without the years of experience. And all that takes time and resources they dont have.

(34,661 posts)many of today's TSO's hired on during the last Recession because they needed a job. And once they finished their Background Checks and completed their Training, they signed on full time and because of Economic Conditions stayed on. And once you establish Seniority, hey,it is like any other job,you can move around the nation or were ever your Seniority takes you. Even though the pay sucks, many of the younger single folks loved it.
Scary thing is,the Economy is going south and Job opportunities are headed in the same direction. At that has the smell of 2006-2008 all over again.
Said this before, when the Airlines say they have seen enough, then this will end.

(838 posts)My big fear is that both the airlines and the administration will see this as an opportunity to push for more privatization of federal jobs.
Wellstone ruled
(34,661 posts)but, the other is,the TSA could be abolished overnight. Lot of the money to support the TSO's come from ticket Taxes.
Your premise has been kicked around for several years. The TSA Union is run by the Airline Association. The formation of their Union was a joke from the get go. So watch for some ugly crap to come down on the Employees.

Best they stay home, it's not like anybody coming here on airlines would overstay their visas or anything like that.

(25,183 posts)that the TSA has caught.
Don't get me wrong, I want them to be paid to do their jobs, but that job seems to mostly consist of hassling people who have no possible reason or ability to screw with a flight.

(53,410 posts)So we can all be more afraid to fly anywhere? So we can find out that more are caught than we thought?
Of course they arent going to let the public know.

(61,694 posts)TSA has found plenty of people trying to board with handguns in their carry-ons. I doubt they were planning an attack on the flight, but who knows after a few drinks?

(53,410 posts)to get checked by airport security before boarding the planes! And worse when you have to empty your backpack while others get to finally move on.
Its gotta be so much worse with the TSA being short handed.
Im glad not to be traveling now!

(50,260 posts)blame them for calling in sick. At this point they probably figure if they get fired they don't care anyway. Who wants a job that can be strangled every time a toddler has a hissy fit?
