The NYT kind of likes trying to convince Dems to devour their own kind.

Neera Tanden said that? Maybe the Center for American Progress needs to get someone who is more "progressive".

7. I don't see the harm in people being concerned about whether or not they have correctly diagnosed

the ailment. Yes, HRC faced multiple malignant forces which in an ideal world she ought not have had to deal with...

It is essential that the Democratic nominee WIN in 2020, regardless of which Democrat that ends up being. We cannot afford to be starry eyed or idealistic or moralizing if said posture risks the victory. Even if that means we don't get our favorite Dem. For example, I'd rather have a Senate majority [or tie with a VP] WITH Manchin than a Senate minority without him. I'd never vote for him in my state, and I wish WV would elect a different Dem in the general but it seems they would likely not do so, so he's a damn sight better FOR THE NATION AND THE WORLD than ANY Repuke having that seat.

It sucks to be pragmatic about the hang-ups and biases of our f--ked up voter populace, but we need to be realistic. A second term of Trump could genuinely mean global human annihilation, never mind the end of our constitutional republic. So let's not ignore the misogyny of some fraction of American voters just because Russia also messed with our election. Do you think they won't be doing this next time too?

17. "constitutional" republic?
Mon Jan 7, 2019, 04:46 AM
Jan 2019

First, a head's up. "Constitutional republic" is a term that conservatives often use to downplay the role of Democracy in our governing process. They spread it around hoping it will catch on. Ever notice how people hardly ever refer anymore to government here as 'our government'? Now it's 'the government', because Grover Norquist led conservatives to begin spreading it around again and again until it finally stuck.

By definition, having the vote is Democratic which would make us a Democratic Republic.

It's ok, we're good

8. FWIW...16 things Hillary Clinton blames for her election loss
Mon Jan 7, 2019, 01:27 AM
Jan 2019
In Hillary Clinton's new book "What Happened" she details the experience of her 2016 campaign, and tries to answer the question posed by the title: what happened that caused her to lose the election?

In the book, and in news appearances, Clinton has pinned her loss on several different factors, such as how journalists covered the election, former FBI Director James Comey, and the questions asked at debates.

Here are the 16 reasons Hillary says she lost:

1. Herself: In her book, Hillary blames her "damn emails," her remarks about putting coal miners out of business, and calling Trump's supporters "deplorable."

2. Russia: "What Putin wanted to do was...influence our election, and he's not exactly fond of strong women, so you add that together and that's pretty much what it means."

3. The DNC: "I'm now the nominee of the Democratic Party. I inherit nothing from the Democratic Party. It was bankrupt...I had to inject money into it - the DNC - to keep it going."

4. Sexism and misogyny: "Sexism and misogyny played a role in the 2016 presidential election. Exhibit A is that the flagrantly sexist candidate won."

5. etc

A Democratic predecessor: "It's really difficult to succeed a president of your own party who has served two terms. That is a historical fact."

A really big something. The last successful candidate in this situation was James freaking Buchanan.

15. Good catch

I think the catch in the statistic was that the candidate had not been an incumbent with the inherent advantage that this brings and I guess GWB had been VP prior to running for President. It made the statistic sound better but was in fact a technicality.

10. I have the feeling that if Hillary had been elected the GOP would have attacked her relentlessly.
Mon Jan 7, 2019, 01:51 AM
Jan 2019

They did it to Obama due to his race and they would do it to Hillary due to her gender. I do not think she wasn't elected for this particular reason but it would certainly be used to attack her over anything and everything. Obama was squeaky clean for 8 years and he was harassed the entire time, the same would happen to a woman. That is how the GOP is...fucking bullies (who happen to be mostly older, white men).
