Declaring a National Emergency

Is the only way to stop this, though an act of congress?

Republicans won't get on board, so - is there any other check on this abuse of power?

I'm guessing that he wants to declare this, tomorrow, in his prime time address (?)

Bring cries of impeachment to the forefront. It would take Maxine Waters about 2 nano-seconds to file the bill. She probably already has several iterations of an impeachment bill in her office.

4. I'm of the mindset that impeachment is

the best answer to this. I don't want him voted out. I think that someone of this ineptitude ought to be kicked out of office. I don't care about his base or 'ripping the country apart.' I actually think it would be healing......in the long run.

5. I'm fine with impeachment, but you also have to understand that he's not likely to be convicted.

Which puts us back at square one...voting him out.

The Founding Fathers didn't envision a scenario where one party was so completely corrupt that they would refuse to convict a president in the Senate just because he belonged to their party.

I just mean it would be fine with me, generally. I'm just beside myself, almost daily, with how this just gets worse and worse.

I would say this - that impeachment - even if we don't convict - is also better than no impeachment. At least that stain, the time/money/angst that would go into defending him --- that's all fine with me. I hope that an impeachment sucks the life out of his corrupt administration. Not to mention the high powered lawyers that they'll all have to hire.......

2. Many ways to fight it

Congress can cancel it, if they override a veto (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Emergencies_Act , including the note near the bottom about requiring a joint resolution).

They can fight it in the courts (I think Josh Marshall believes Trump would lose in court).

It can be fought and delayed. Remember, even if the project was approved it would take forever to get going. There are eminent domain issues, etc.

He may try it, but IMHO only as a political weapon to make it look like he's strong.

But he has a lot of base all over and i'm sure many of them will say piously something along the lines of "sacrifices must be made" or some nonsense like that.

11. Militia vs militia. Are the vigilante militias still creeping around the border after the election?

My default assumption is that Trump is lying for political gain - but unless he's building up to not holding elections in 2020, I don't see how keeping this going now benefits him. I guess my most likely chain of events is something along this.

Trump - "Well I don't like it, but I guess we better keep the government open."
Hannity and Coulter - "Trump is a loser"
Trump - "I can't let them call me that; I'd better do whatever they say."
Democrats (and some Republicans) in Congress "Yeah, but you aren't going to get your money for this waste of time wall. We aren't going to approve it."
Trump - "Can't show weakness i'll attack them even more - and I won't back down till I get my money for the waste of time wall even if i have to do drastic shocking things."

I just don't see border security as being as big a problem as to necessitate this - I don't even really see any evidence of that - I don't live down there though, so it's possible I'm missing the details.

It would be the highest of high crimes--subverting our democracy
