Gallup: Significantly more U.S. adults continued to identify as political independents (42%) in 2018 than as either Democrats (30%) or Republicans (26%). At least four in 10 Americans have been political independents in seven of the past eight years, including a record-high 43% in 2014.

(2,824 posts)Not sure which one is the winner of why people say they are independent. One third are embarrassed to admit they voted for Rump against their best interests, another third are trying to date a Dem lady and the last third are just young and clueless.

(7,403 posts)I think many that claim to be independent are actually registered in either the D or R party if their state has closed primaries.
