General Discussion

My 71 year old father, who has worked for a defense contractor for 49 1/2 years and has been a life-long Republican has finally gotten fed up with Trump. We were talking about all the environmental regulations that Trump has overturned, mostly by either executive order or by appointing people to dismantle agencies. When I told him he appointed Aurelia Skipwith, a former attorney for Monsanto to be Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, that was the end. He said "I don't know if I can support Trump any more. I may have to vote Democrat, whoever they put up so we can hold the nation together."
None of the scandals mattered. Everything was waved off as "They're all crooked" or the like. What got through was the dismantling of Bear's Ears and the "sudden" discovery of uranium on the lands that were made available. The regulations allowing dumping coal sludge into river ways. The re-classification of protected wetlands when it comes to pesticide, herbicide and fertilizer dumping. And then the damage being done to parks like Yellowstone and Joshua Tree. When I told him about monarch populations being down 97% from the 1980's due to carbon dioxide, and Trump appointing someone whose company all but orchestrated "colony collapse" in bees, that was the breaking point.
Even though I'm horrified at the state of affairs of the country, I'm proud of my father for finally deciding that he can't support the man that is actively trying to destroy America's natural heritage.

(988 posts)Today I asked my father, a 30 year veteran, if he believes trump knows more than the generals when it comes to military and he said he might know more. I asked him if I claimed to know more than he knows after 30 years and he laughed. No problem Defending trumps nasty Ass.

(82,849 posts)It's difficult to know what's going to resonate with any particular person, and I wouldn't have guessed that environmental degradation was the tipping point for a career defense contractor Republican. But there it is.

(30,613 posts)I only go to court when I know I'm 100% innocent.
On the 3 occasions I've gone, I've always been surprised at which piece of evidence or testimony ends up persuading the judge. But I've won every time.

(7,808 posts)It may be economics reasons that cause one to take back support, it might be the realization that he's not moral in any way, it might be the treatment of refugee children, it could be the obvious and constant lies, or, like your father, it could be the destruction of our natural habitat.
But it is happening little by little. The base is shrinking and horrified by what they supported.

(10,151 posts)Come to visit our small organic farm every fall. We had to keep an eye out because they came and went so quickly. My wife was the first to notice their annual visits. They looked like dry leaves flying back onto the trees........They didn't come this year.

(42,770 posts)I looked it up one time and there were hundreds but they were so technical it would take some digging.
We should form a working group and each take a handful and research what they are and what the implications are.
Any Democrat running in 2020 should be privy to this information because it will be a brag fest on their side. In fact I would love to see some commercials about this. A child wanting to swim in a lake that former presidents had protected from poison, and now there is nothing to help protect them because of trump. Anything like this would be immensely effective.

(12,153 posts)That ad would indeed be tremendously effective. If you want to peel off Republicans, information about how their partys policies have ruined fishing spots, hunting grounds, and boating opportunities can be effective as well.
I look to organizations like the Union of Concerned Scientists, Sierra Club, Wilderness Watch, and others to keep tabs on the (sorry) state of the environment.
This list has a few more:

(11,949 posts)Many will never abandon him. They are too invested in the racism and misogyny. And the religious nuts are a totally lost cause. Cause Jesus.
But we do not need all of them. If even 10% of his base is shed it is over for him. And he and the Senate know it.

(12,806 posts)I have family who seems to think Trump walks on water. We wonder, "How can they still support him? What do they think he has in fact accomplished? How do they think anything he does is in our best interest as a nation?" My only conclusion is they see and hear all things Trump only through a filter of rightwing media -- and if they DO happen to hear some truth, they dismiss it as liberal propaganda or "fake news" (because that's what all Republicans are taught).
So, how did your dad come across the light that led him out of the cave?

(210 posts)I'm working on a BS Civil Engineering, with the goal of working for the Dept. of Interior. When he asks me how classes are going, I tell him I have concerns getting a job because [fill in latest environmental news].
I also got him to quit supporting Pete Sessions because of Sessions push to remove protections for pre-existing conditions. I'm on my third round of cancer, and let him know that things that Sessions and other Republicans are doing would prevent me from ever having insurance. My medical bills in 2018 exceeded $380,000, but my costs after insurance were about $11,000. Not having insurance would have literally been the death of me.

(108,973 posts)I'm hoping, but I also know what reality looks like. The chemo for my colon cancer gave me diabetes, and I'm looking at pancreatic failure. I've also since gained an as-of-yet unidentified mass in my neck which is slowly strangling me as the doctors try to figure it out. I've had to quit working due to everything going on.
BUT... because of the ACA, not only do I have insurance, my rate dropped from $303 a month to $35. I'm getting it worked on.
I've always said I'm gonna die on my feet and laughing. So far, I'm still laughing.

(19,558 posts)I believe this is how we change minds. Within our own local network where we have influence we calmly persist with reality.
I flipped my brother before 2016. It was an amazing personal victory and he still despises Trump. He's getting along much better with the rest of the family now, which appears to have changed his overall attitude about his former ideological beliefs. He even cracks Mitch McConnell jokes regularly now.
