I am an historian of Mexico.

I just cried through Dolt45’s awful speech.
I can even begin to discount the lies, because I just don’t have the energy. What I do know is that some- many perhaps- of my students will get up tomorrow and come to class full of hate and rage. They did last semester, when “that commie prof teaches with a liberal bias,” or “that bitch should go back to Mexico if she thinks it’s so great.” Taking my classes is a sick way of proving their point about Mexico and Latin America.
I’ve spent my career studying and teaching about Mexico. What the hell for? So this motherfucker can undo all the work of dedicated professionals?
I give up.

Then I’m on sabbatical and I’m going to find a nice quiet hamlet in the Netherlands to finish my book and find some peace.
I’m just completely burned out from teaching Latin America in the age of the Deplorables.

my parents took us once on a vacation to cozumel, mexico, back in 1981. quite coincidentally, it turned out my high school spanish teacher was vacationing there as well. got us away from the touristy areas, into a small bungalow run by a retired mexican politician. he took us to so many great local restaurants and other site, and we actually spoke in spanish to people who didn't know english, instead of staying in the american hotels and eating to the people who cater to english-speaking tourists.

he taught me love of the language and all spanish-speaking cultures.

since then i've been to mexico 6 more times (cozumel again, monterrey 4 times, and mexico d.f.) and spain (barcelona) once and loved every visit.

it's not at all a waste.

I’m kind of happy I’m not teaching History of mexico this semester, I’m just teaching about indigenous peoples...which has its own set frustrations (students using “savages” as a term and discussing how great evangelization was.

You may not get through to all of them but each one you educate is a key to the future.

Don't despair.

I hope you're able to stay, get over this hump and somehow toughen up yet more.

A friend did give up teaching social sciences at the college level here in the deep south. Many of our kids are raised to understand that all truth is in the Bible, libraries full of lies, but they come of course for that passport to the middle class. Since they know classes are major hunting grounds for Satan, every time our friend said something that conflicted with what they already believed he knew yet another mind had just identified him as on the side of evil and slammed shut against everything he was supposed to be teaching.

I teach in the pseudo-South. I teach my students the same stuff I would if I was in the Northeast. Many love it but others probably think I’m “of the devil,” as they say.
