Cracks emerging among Senate Republicans as Murkowski calls for end to shutdown

Cracks emerging among Senate Republicans as Murkowski calls for end to shutdown

(CNN)Patience is beginning to wear thin among Senate Republicans for a prolonged government shutdown, with a growing number at risk of revolting if the fight over funding President Donald Trump's border wall drags out indefinitely.

In interviews with a wide range of Senate Republicans, a number have grown anxious about the long-term impact of a partial shutdown that has shuttered a quarter of the federal government and impacted hundreds of thousands of federal employees and contractors, including many in their states who will soon miss their first paychecks. And some GOP senators are signaling a new willingness to allow a number of key federal agencies -- such as the Treasury Department, the Transportation Department and the National Park Service -- to reopen even if the fight over the border wall is not resolved, breaking with the White House and Senate GOP leaders.

"I think we can walk and chew gum," GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said on Tuesday, adding she's "amenable to a process that would allow for those appropriations bills that have concluded some time ago that they be enacted into law -- whether it's the Department of Interior or the IRS. I'd like to see that."

In a warning sign for the White House, a number of Senate Republicans offered tepid support for the hard-line stance taken by Trump, who is backed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. While many Republicans said they'd continue to support McConnell and Trump for now, it was clear that support won't last indefinitely.

"There's a time when that may run out," Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson said of support for McConnell's refusal to back spending bills that lack Trump's support. "But right now that doesn't run out."

It would be a good thing to act in a bi-partisan way, under the circumstances. In my opinion.

and start emphasizing the little, everyday things government does their constituents need that aren't getting done. For ex, there was a story sbout a small specialty brewer that can't sell their new product because the label and warnings on the can haven't been approved because the department that routinely oks labels is closed.

from there to the delivery drivers, the stores that stock the product, etc.

And the same thing is happening in thousands of businesses.

In addition to the multiplier effect of money in the system, which is what I think you referred to.

McConnell has 3 defections so far, the pressure is going to be on him to bring the bills up for a vote. If he refuses, we need to put pressure on him, the press needs to put pressure on him. Those bills will pass with no problem if McConnell brings them to the floor.

Next question, if McConnell finally caves, will Trump have the guts to veto the bills? I bet he won't.

If a bill sits 10 days with neither veto nor signature, it becomes law.

Trump does not need to sign the bills, just let them sit and they'll become law. He can tell himself and his supporters he didn't cave and that no wall is the fault of Congress.

how many House Republicans vote with the Democrats today. The last time, 5 voted for the 1st bill, and 7 voted for the 2nd bill. If more Republican House members defect today, that will put more pressure on McConnell to bring the bills to the floor. I am interested to see how many Republicans break ranks today, this will be a tell.

He will do what the administration wants. The media should ask every Republican Senator how supporting this shut down helps his/her state.

Murkowski knows a fight over funding for a wall that will never be built does nothing for Alaska. And I think she has a little influence on some others.

And I think if the Senate were to pass the House Bill, 45 would sign it. He can spin it that unlike Chuck and Nancy he has too much compassion for federal workers to continue the shutdown. This can be his rallying cry for 2020.

The dems should be pounding these points home on national TV & social media. Aren't there any advertising dollars for regular campaigns like this? I would have had ads ready for after the speeches last night. They should have played that video of Trump owning the shutdown everyday since he said it.

https://www.brookings.edu/blog/fixgov/2019/01/09/trumps-shutdown-could-wear-out-his-welcome-in-the-senate-once-and-for-all/

Senator Lisa Murkowski (AK) has joined three other Republican Senators—Thom Tillis (NC), Susan Collins (ME), and Cory Gardner (CO)—to call for an end to the ongoing partial shutdown. These party defections illustrate that the longer Trump lets the shutdown go on, the more dangerous it gets for him. Once there are a total of 20 Republicans willing to vote with Democrats, they can override Trump’s threatened veto of the spending bill and the government will reopen. In other words, four down; 16 to go.
