Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsRick Wilson: Trump speech "can most accurately be seen as the death twitch of The Wall cult."
He said it tonight; the idea of a glorious concrete wall from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico is deader than that lemur he glues on his head every morning. It will, at most, be a fence. This is not what Trumps supporters voted for. They voted for his sales pitch of a 30-foot concrete wall with laser moats, robot alligators, and minefields, all paid for by Mexico.
Donald Trump, as even the slowest members of the class have now noticed, is a lying liar who lies.
President Veruca Salt demanded his Wall and bet his most fundamental campaign promise on it. He walked himself into a political box canyon of a foolish government shutdown, an untenable demand, and Democrats motivated to hold the line. The speech wasn't the usual trick escape play for the man accustomed to getting away with damn near everything; it was the exact opposite.
The Wall is dead. The shutdown will end. Donald Trump blew it, bigly.

(37,648 posts)In the end, it didn't matter. It was the fever pitch of the call of the wild. Were details wrong? They didn't care. Here was a man who thought like they did..."no more illegals!" (The inference being that the Democrats wanted illegal immigration, which is not true.) He was so bold, so strong, such a deal maker! If anyone could do it, THE GREAT ONE could! Yay! Hopefully Mexico will pay for it. But if not, he'll find a way!
The fever that spreads among cult members when the leader is on his game and spouts foolishness, but spouts it loudly, with confidence, and with assurances. It MUST be true! It HAS to be!

(7,142 posts)that it is former Republicans who are the most outspoken people against Trump.
I mean Nicole Wallace at 4 PM is just as good as Rachel.
Steve Schmidt and Rick Wilson are constantly blistering Trump.
Miles Archer
(18,837 posts)Not a direct quote, but she basically said that at a time like this, we need to transcend party affiliations and do what's best for the country.
The GOP has largely been burned to the ground...even when Trump is gone, it will be a long time before Wilson, Wallace, Schmidt and the rest can "go home" again, if they can at all.
Wilson is frequently vocal on Twitter. He still identifies himself as a Republican who is attempting to ride out the storm.
It's gonna be a long ride, Rick...although he is smart enough to know that things are not going to simply snap back to the "normal" he remembers prior to Trump.

(56,828 posts)There have been a ton of Democrats that have been very outspoken - Maxine Waters, Ted Lieu, Adam Schiff and many Democratic leaning pundits - have been just as outspoken.
It's just that the media loves to pit Never Trump Republicans like Schmidt, Wilson, Ana Navarro, etc against pro Trump Republicans and watch the fireworks on TV.
watoos
(7,142 posts)No one, other than Rachel, digs into the Trump/Russia conspiracy with more fervor than she does.
Most of the other cable news anchors do what you suggest. Tweety, Anderson Cooper, Wolf, are the dumbest news anchors on the planet. They and others don't have a clue what the Trump crime family has done, what the Trump campaign has done. I will watch Nicole, Ari Melber, Chris Hayes, Rachel, Don Lemon, and from time to time take a peek at Shep Smith.
Congressional Democrats should be outspoken. We need more Maxines who aren't afraid to push for impeachment.

(30,613 posts)Nobody selects a better group of experts or pundits to discuss the latest in Trump/Russia than Nicole Wallace. The other shows (Tweety, Cooper, Wolf) refuse to connect the dots and treat every single new piece of information as if it is the first news of questionable activity with Russians.

(7,142 posts)He was for the invasion of Iraq and Phil Donahue was against it. msnbc fired Donahue and kept Tweety.
I am really surprised that msnbc hasn't fired any anti-Trump anchors.
I remember that when Olbermann, Ratigan, Brashear, Harris/Perry, Uygur,Ed Schultz got fired they were popular. They didn't get fired because of poor ratings, and msnbc is supposed to be liberal, ehh? At least it puts a progressive slant to the right wing narratives, and yes several anchors are straying from the narrative. They better be careful.

(37,648 posts)So they come at this from a different perspective, and have different goals.
Wallace and Wilson & Scarborough are media pundits. They are freer just to criticize without an end goal. Schiff's goal, for example, has been to shine a light on the sham that was the House of Rep so-called "investigation" run by Devin Nunes. He usually didn't get off track and start talking about Trump's outrageous behavior or comments that didn't relate to the investigation.
But you are right...they sure have stepped up to the plate to shine a light on Trump's and the Republican Party's outrageous behavior and statements at times. Especially Schiff, who appeared on tv a LOT, to spread what he knew about the so-called investigation.
Tracer
(2,769 posts)I think that is true. He no longer has the ability to drive the news to his benefit.
Democrats now have people who can change the right wing narratives. Speaker Pelosi can call a press conference and the M$M will show up.
Al Franken was one who could change the narrative, that's why they took him out.
Ocasio-Cortez can change the narrative, we need to watch her back, they are already trying to take her out.
The M$M is not our friend, if it were impartial, Trump would be impeached by now.

(7,142 posts)but I agree, he can be a Jekyll and Hyde. He does understand what's going on though and he usually has good guests on his show.
Half the time he plays dumb about Trump/Russia and he knows better. Why does he give Corsi a platform to tell more obvious lies?
True Blue American
(17,981 posts)Why is Ari allowing Corsi to go on and on lying like crazy? He had Corsi on again last night and his Rapper schtick wears thin. One night he allowed him to take up half his show.

(7,142 posts)Trump's reelection campaign advertised the speech. What Trump did was start his 2020 campaign groveling for money. Trump used the Oval office to begin his 2020 campaign, that to me disrespects the office of the president.
I don't give a shit if he sniffled his way through a Steven Miller written speech and didn't go off the teleprompter, using the Oval office for political reasons is anything but presidential.

I was absolutely wrong, it worked for the most part. I did not factor in the M$M being complicit with Republicans.
Hopefully, the GOP/Trump party has gone too far and we the people can Make America America Again. We need to obliterate them in 2020, and we need to take back the state Houses to put an end to gerrymandering.

(16,917 posts)I no longer wait to see what will "change their minds or open their eyes."
We know what a disaster last night's Oval Office throw-up was. That being said, the local right-wing rag ran an on-line survey asking if IQ45 had convinced people that we need "the wall."
(brace yourself - well, no, I'm sure you already know what to expect) - over 50% of respondents answered "yes" and less than 40% answered "no."
These are people that will vote again.
THAT is why it is important that we GET OUT THE VOTE!!!! We have the numbers - we just have to get them to get to the polls!
