Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about a consensual bj. Trump has done way more since he became president than Nixon could ever dream of. I need to say that what Clinton did was horrible, he abused his power to say the least.

The other thing that bothered me was this morning on the Today Show. Kristen Welker mentioned Chuck and Nancy instead of saying Senator Schumer and Speaker Pelosi. It's a derogatory term that Trump uses for both of them. Why is an NBC reporter repeating that line??

It was that long ago I stopped believing that NPR was an actual liberal voice, and they haven't proved me wrong ever since. The problem is that compared to much of the rest of the MSM they seem liberal, and people listen to them thinking they're getting a liberal point of view, when they're not.

(22,628 posts)Inherited that still works. I may have to crank it up. I used to listen to VOA a fair amount but it even isn't what it used to be. When I was a teen my transistor radio was my prized possession/companion.
I cancelled my SiriusXM, the older I get the more of a tightwad I am becoming. Which really is a little senseless because I can't take it with me and it's unlikely that my one possible heir, a niece, will even be interested in it. I am amazed at and interested in the shift in perspective about "worldly goods" our youth have now.

(42,770 posts)now. If I didn't know so much about how horrible a person Trump is and realize we'd be feeding the beast, I imagine it really wouldn't be so hard for a non-politcal type to think "hell, put an end to the shutdown and just approve the 5 billion." Not true yet, for sure, but could come to pass.
I think that the Dems should stress the fact that border money from last year hasn't even been spent. This implies Trump doesn't even really truly care about the border. A compromise could be spend all the money first, then come to me with proof a wall will help.

Dear @WhiteHouse,
Reality check:
The House passed bipartisan legislation last week to reopen government and give money to border security.
Also, how come you have only spent 60% of the funds we previously gave you for #BorderSecurity?
Please stop lying to the American people.

Reality check:
The President offered to work with Democrats in good faith to reopen the Government and secure our border.
The President put forward a common-sense solution developed by law enforcement professionals at @DHSgov.
The Democrats have offered nothing.

(128,745 posts)I.e., here is the direct link to the article - https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/01/03/does-it-matter-that-trump-has-only-spent-six-percent-wall-money/?utm_term=.5ca8a1c28632
I think the issue is (for anyone who is not drenched in the administrative/finance side of government - I've had to take far too many appropriations law courses before I retired from the feds) - you have appropriations (congress) vs allotments (departmental distribution of appropriated monies) vs commitments (sortof like "designations" to purchase something) vs obligations (monies actually set aside to be paid) vs expenditures (payments - check cut or electronic transfer made), etc.
There is one section from the WaPo article that says this -
<...>
The Pinocchio Test
This is a good example of how lawmakers use the complexity of legislative sausage-making to confuse voters. Focusing on spending sounds reasonable, even though its not what lawmakers typically track when assessing how government agencies use the funds appropriated by Congress. Its especially misleading in the case of a large infrastructure project for which Congress has given the agency up to five years to use the funds.
In this case, about 60 percent of the funds have been awarded in contracts to construct fencing along the border. Thats the relevant number, which is 10 times higher than the 6 percent touted by Democrats. Leahys figure is not invented out of thin air, but it is misleading enough to qualify for Three Pinocchios.
And I think that is why Ted said what he did! Most of the money (which was apparently appropriated for use over 5 years, so multi-year, and can be carried over a FY) was set aside to go to at least one, 5-year contract. So I think Ted is asking - what did you do with the other 40% (if it wasn't obligated on other contracts, like maybe for technologies that would be integrated with the other contracts, etc).
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)Spent/paid out. 60% allocated toward potential contractors who have not started work yet. No link, sorry.
Nevertheless,. Even if it is 40% unallocated,. Proves he doesn't care about actual security...just a shiny thing he can call his.
