Someone at the AP needs to be fired

AP FACT CHECK: Democrats put the blame for the shutdown on Trump. But it takes two to tango. Trump's demand for $5.7 billion for his border wall is one reason for the budget impasse. The Democrats refusal to approve the money is another.

I see there are people that are having fun with this awful tweet

AP FACT CHECK: Bank officials put blame for the hostage crisis on the bank robbers. The robbers’ demand for “all the money you have” is one reason for the crisis. But the bank officials’ refusal to pay up is another.

Mugger: Give me $2 million.
Jogger: I don't have $2 million.
Mugger: *shoots jogger*
AP Fact Check: It takes two to tango.

This is my favorite, though

AP FACT CHECK: Leia put the blame for the destruction of Alderaan on Darth Vader. But it takes two to tango. Vader shooting a powerful superlaser at the planet is one reason it was destroyed. Leia's refusal to tell him where the Rebel base was is another.

In 1992 Cokie Roberts completely dismissed Bill Clinton's campaign for President, basically saying there was no way on god's green earth that he could get the nomination. She never seemed to change her mind that year.

It was that long ago I stopped believing that NPR was an actual liberal voice, and they haven't proved me wrong ever since. The problem is that compared to much of the rest of the MSM they seem liberal, and people listen to them thinking they're getting a liberal point of view, when they're not.

I cancelled my SiriusXM, the older I get the more of a tightwad I am becoming. I think that the Dems should stress the fact that border money from last year hasn't even been spent. This implies Trump doesn't even really truly care about the border. A compromise could be spend all the money first, then come to me with proof a wall will help.

@tedlieu

Dear @WhiteHouse,

Reality check:

The House passed bipartisan legislation last week to reopen government and give money to border security.

Also, how come you have only spent 60% of the funds we previously gave you for #BorderSecurity?

Please stop lying to the American people.
The White House

@WhiteHouse

Reality check:

The President offered to work with Democrats in good faith to reopen the Government and secure our border.

The President put forward a common-sense solution developed by law enforcement professionals at @DHSgov.

The Democrats have offered nothing.

91. The link goes to a fact-checker
Thu Jan 10, 2019, 12:46 PM
Jan 2019

I.e., here is the direct link to the article - https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/01/03/does-it-matter-that-trump-has-only-spent-six-percent-wall-money/?utm_term=.5ca8a1c28632

I think the issue is (for anyone who is not drenched in the administrative/finance side of government - I've had to take far too many appropriations law courses before I retired from the feds) - you have appropriations (congress) vs allotments (departmental distribution of appropriated monies) vs commitments (sortof like "designations" to purchase something) vs obligations (monies actually set aside to be paid) vs expenditures (payments - check cut or electronic transfer made), etc.

There is one section from the WaPo article that says this -

“CBP has obligated more than 90 percent of the funds provided in FY 2017 and 2018,” said CBP spokesman Andrew Meehan. “To date, nearly 60 percent of those funds are obligated onto a contract, referred to as contract award, by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.”

<...>

The Pinocchio Test

This is a good example of how lawmakers use the complexity of legislative sausage-making to confuse voters. Focusing on spending sounds reasonable, even though it’s not what lawmakers typically track when assessing how government agencies use the funds appropriated by Congress. It’s especially misleading in the case of a large infrastructure project for which Congress has given the agency up to five years to use the funds.

In this case, about 60 percent of the funds have been awarded in contracts to construct fencing along the border. That’s the relevant number, which is 10 times higher than the 6 percent touted by Democrats. Leahy’s figure is not invented out of thin air, but it is misleading enough to qualify for Three Pinocchios.

And I think that is why Ted said what he did! Most of the money (which was apparently appropriated for use over 5 years, so multi-year, and can be carried over a FY) was set aside to go to at least one, 5-year contract. So I think Ted is asking - what did you do with the other 40% (if it wasn't obligated on other contracts, like maybe for technologies that would be integrated with the other contracts, etc).

AP has now issued another statement about that "two to tango" tweet:

And that response to the response was equally ridiculous!

THey need to publicly apologize. Public humiliation for the staff involved might be appropriate as well. Get on all GOP Senators now though! They need to feel the pain and burn. They are hurting people. 800000+ hostages taken by the Republican Party and their AHole in Cheat is not acceptable! Their families and their communities are also suffering. Set it off! Create media on your corner street!

Someone posted this on DU recently; seems appropriate to review when thinking of where to get your news.

And thanks for finding that and posting it here.

I have been cursorily following all the mergers and acquisitions and asset swapping since passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and am glad to see someone compiled this as the latest iteration of where the media industry stands at the moment.

Someone here on DU posted it and I just had to grab it. Should've bookmarked the thread.

Entities sharing in a $2T tax kickback may have some incentive to engage in "bothsides" instead of objectivity.
