(23,083 posts)I was raised as a conservative Evangelical but in 9th grade I had the great fortune to have Jack S. Lewis as my Social Studies teacher. He played Baez for us and talked about her anti-war stance. He talked about the real differences between Russian Communism, Socialism, Democracy and Republics with no RW BS, just facts. My mind was blown and my life started changing right then and there. Within a year I was marching in Anti-Viet Nam War marches, burned my bra, started an underground railroad network to protect our friends from the draft, and started smoking pot. I have to say I'm proud of all our efforts to keep people from being sent over there, we were very successful. We scouted the local drafting offices, found the best places where it was easier to be rejected, came up with lots of strategies to get people rejected and it worked almost every time. All because of Joan Bazes' passion and compassion.

(52,183 posts)it was at a summer camp when she was about 14-15, my father would have been 19-20 (camp counselor).
my father brought his guitar with him and would play folk music and show tunes for everyone at night.
she only knew a few chords at that time. my father claims to have taught her a few more basic chords.
of course he had no idea she would ever become famous....
at the time, she went by "joannie" and pronounced her last name as one syllable -- "baze".
Thanks for sharing the story. I discovered Joan Baez when I was a teenager at music camp. One of the counselors kept raving about her and so I just had to listen and was hooked. Glad to see her still looking amazing and still relevant today.

(10,885 posts)Joan and her music have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. She inspires; she teaches; she entertains; she leads and participates, and she gives of herself to any who listen.
Happy Birthday, beautiful Joan!

(my guess is they did not)
Our county chair shares her birthday with George W. I love to point this out to her every year. She thinks up new names to call me every year.
