You have to understand Trump's strategy for negotiations: He walks away.

How did Trump do business?

Step 1: Wage a PR-campaign to make yourself look successful.
Step 2: Shop around until you find somebody who's so impressed that they are willing to do business with you on your terms.
Step 3: If there's trouble, cut your losses and get out.
Step 4: Find the next sucker.

When faced with problems, Trump always moves on. He goes from real-estate to Trump-casino to Trump-magazine to Trump-steaks to Trump-vodka to American Football to...

He always moves on.

He cuts his losses, walks away and tries to find another sucker he can exploit.

Iran-deal? Walked away.
NAFTA? Walked away.
Global-warming? Walked away.
Decades of geopolitcal alliance? Walked away.

Except that he cannot walk away from the shutdown. He cannot walk away, he cannot bully his opponent into submission, he cannot lie his way out of it... and that confuses him.

He's out of ideas what to do.

He is not supposed to be held accountable! He's not supposed to be pinned down to one version of truth. He's the guy who walks away with impunity!

It's not like party caterers. Trump can stiff one caterer, no problem. He can stiff two, ten or 20 caterers. There's always new caterers going into business who will believe that working on a Trump project is worth getting stiffed because of the prestige of it all.

But there's only one Congress. And a lot of members in the House have a memory longer than yesterday afternoon.

He pays the people he needs. Not very many people know how to build a skyscraper. But there are thousands of plumbers and electricians in New York that he can rip off. You can just hear his pitch: "Do a good job for me and you'll get all my work. I'll make you rich." Then the job is completed and he fails to pay.

All he has is emotional outbursts when he doesn’t get his way.

His cheeks are beginning to bulge a lot and his orange hue is getting darker. Is that a puff of smoke I see coming out of his ears? Maybe!
