Coast Guard advises furloughed employees hold garage sales, babysit to ease financial woes
The Coast Guard Support Program's pamphlet "Managing your finances during a furlough" suggested that Coast Guardmen pick up babysitting gigs, hold garage sales, and serve as a "mystery shopper," according to the Post.
The five-page sheet offered advice for Coast Guard families experiencing financial and emotional distress caused by the shutdown, which has forced around 41,000 active-duty members of its workforce to work without pay, according to the newspaper.
The pamphlet was taken off of the Coast Guard's website on Wednesday morning after the Post inquired about it.
"[The suggestions] do not reflect the Coast Guards current efforts to support our workforce during this lapse in appropriations," Lt. Cmdr. Scott McBride, a Coast Guard spokesman, told the Post. As such, this guidance has been removed.
