Nancy Pelosi gets a delivery of 10,000 roses, thanks to an online fundraiser

I posted about the fundraiser on DU a couple weeks ago - I suspect DUers gave a good chunk of dough for her roses too!: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100211620387

https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-entertainment/2019/01/09/nancy-pelosi-gets-delivery-roses-thanks-an-online-fundraiser/

Things that are often delivered to a congressional office: copies of the Congressional Record, constituent mail, mean tweets. Not so common? A drop-off of 10,000 long-stemmed red roses. You know, just because.

Newly minted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was the recipient of the unusual gift Wednesday, courtesy of an online fundraiser among readers of liberal site DailyKos. It was a redux of a similar gift to Pelosi in 2010 (that floral delivery was a thank-you for the passing of health-care legislation).

DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas said that this year they surpassed their goal of raising enough money to buy 10,000 roses within an hour and a half of posting. They ended up collecting enough for 25,000 stems — so many that they shipped the extras, at the speaker’s request, to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Her daughter posted on Twitter about the roses as well:

Sweet🌹@dailykos asked for 10,000 roses for Nancy Pelosi but “ended up collecting enough for 25,000 stems — so many that they shipped the extras, at @SpeakerPelosi’s request, to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center

Do any other DU old timers remember that? Come on Skinner, et al.! Confirm my memory with the film!

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2005/2/13/92310/-

For Immediate Release
Senator Boxer to receive bouquet of 5,000 Roses on Valentine's Day!

Senator Barbara Boxer of California will receive a bouquet of almost 5,000 roses from supporters and constituents across the country on Valentine's Day, February 14th, as a loving thank you for her recent outstanding service in the Senate. Organized by Stacy Davies of Claremont, California, the roses will be delivered February 14th to the Hart Senate Building office of Barbara Boxer in Washington DC. at 3:30 p.m. EST.

The note included with the flowers will read: "Dear Senator Boxer: You are a shining example of what a civil servant can, and should, be, and we, your constituents and supporters, deeply appreciate your heroic charge to bring accountability, responsibility and honesty back into our government."

Senator Boxer has recently emerged as the leading voice in the fight against the Bush Administration's destructive mandates both abroad and at home. She has disputed the questionable Ohio 2004 election vote, elegantly denied Condoleezza Rice a confirmation vote, and almost single-handedly stood up for the principles of freedom, truth, and accountability we expect from our elected officials. A grand public thank-you is in order

"I was so completely taken with Senator Boxer's candid and eloquent remarks during the Rice conformation hearings--her intelligence and her passion--that I thought it would be wonderful to send her roses on Valentine's Day to show my gratitude," says Davies, a freelance writer and DJ at the Claremont Colleges in Claremont, California. "Coast to Coast Florist (1-888-269-5297) was the first name to pop up on Google. I explained to the company's CEO Art Conforti, that my idea was that people be charged a simple $10 for three red roses that would then be sent, en masse. It didn't take long before he enthusiastically told me he would create the pledge line, set up a toll free number and retrain his reps. After we worked out the final details and I hung up, I was in a daze--it was going to happen!"

"I emailed my friends and all of the liberal web sites I could think of. It was Mike Malloy of Air America Radio who unknowingly provided the next much-needed step in this campaign. The day after receiving my email, he apparently talked about it on the air, with other hosts like Randi Rhodes joining in a few days later."

"In Arizona, a woman named Cynthia Black overheard Mike on the radio that night. Cynthia happens to be a major blogger, with her own diary on DailyKos.com. She posted the story and info, and the emails and phone calls to the florist poured in!"

"Responding to the flood of emails was time-consuming, but I was so grateful for the responses that I answered every one of them. It was important to me that people knew I was just one person, not even an activist, really, who happened to set a wheel in motion. No one backed me, I was with no group or club, and I certainly wasn't a corporation!"

"I received a call from Senator Boxer this past Friday. I told her that the grassroots response had been overwhelmingly positive, that we'd received emails from every state and even a few from abroad. She was gracious and very moved. She said she plans to keep just a few of the roses and will be sending the rest to the VA hospital for the `people who have been casualties of this administration's disastrous policies.' She told me she's looking forward to seeing Secretary Rice again this Thursday and said `Boy, do I have some questions for her!'

The way she and Harry Reid got the ACA passed still rankles RWNJs. (Probably because of how many people it helped). It wasn't the single payer system she wanted, but, just like Hillary, she worked to get the best she could through a changing Congress.

I'm really glad that people pooled together and got her the roses. There can be tough times between now and the next blue wave. She knows there are people who appreciate her effort.

"Because of the ACA about 44 million people in this country have no health insurance, and another 38 million have inadequate health insurance."

It's a bit hard for me to see how a law that resulted in millions of people getting affordable health insurance for the first time caused millions of people to have no health insurance.

The logic escapes me.

Your polling seems a bit suspicious too when you assert, without citation, that "the majority of Republicans support Medicare for All."

A vast majority — 70 percent — of Americans in a new poll supports "Medicare for all," also known as a single-payer health-care system.

The Reuters–Ipsos survey found 85 percent of Democrats said they support the policy along with 52 percent of Republicans.

"It's a bit hard for me to see how a law that resulted in millions of people getting affordable health insurance for the first time caused millions of people to have no health insurance."

Because the law excludes them. It denies millions upon millions of people health care. Nowhere else in the civilized world does this happen. For the richest nation in the history of the world to do this is shameful.

Gee, you point to an article, dated "08/23/18", about "a new poll" while arguing that the ACA causes a loss of health care and deaths.

Where is the poll from the time Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barack Obama, and many, many others were getting "Obamacare" passed? How does ACA prevent Medicare for all? How does the ACA prevent health insurance?

How is the gifting of roses to Nancy Pelosi, by voluntary donations, offensive to you?

Wanting everything all at once can lead to a great deal of frustration. Some people work for years to get just a portion of what they want. Some others then come along and complain so little has been done, but can't seem to finish the job. Still others pick up the task as it is and complete a little more.

Something about a tortoise goes here, I think. Or maybe shoes and a man with no feet. I get confused sometimes.

Please, carry on with the crusade. I would suggest you cease blaming the ACA for 45,000 deaths a year, though, until you can come up with some facts to support the claim.

The ACA by design does not cover millions upon millions of Americans. 45,000 deaths a year is the result.

Mocking universal healthcare as a human right is just wrong. We are the richest nation on Earth. Yet we are the only country in the civilized world that does to provide universal healthcare.

The ACA is the closest we've come to it.

Spit on actual progressive legislation if you want, but no one 'designed' it not to cover Americans.

Since you don't seem to be familiar with the deets on the ACA or universal health care, lemme remind you...

The GOP killed the medicaid expansion, not Nancy Pelosi, who seems to be your dartboard.

You seem to be cool with the alternative to the ACA - which was what it was before the ACA, or the GOP version.

So you're cool with 30million people dying from going without the healthcare the ACA provided?

If not, thank Nancy Pelosi, because that was her doing. You need to learn a little respect for women of an age that get it done.

JPR slow today?

Cause the 50% of Americans who get their healthcare from their employer will not make that trade.

I also think she donated many of them to a military hospital, so people who are actually suffering can get a little uplift in their day. And, I'm sure many who donated also donate to food lifelines and other charities in their local areas (I often buy for food banks, and donate to other relief organizations from time to time, though I would obviously prefer that it came from tax dollars, not personal donations by people like me).

I think the optics are good.

This has nothing to do with Speaker Pelosi's wealth, and everything to do with people freely giving from their resources to welcome, encourage, and support her in the battle she is waging on our behalf.

If it were the result of some type of mandatory tax, or if she insisted upon receiving 10,000 roses as a condition of representing us, that would be a different matter.
