Why it matters: In all previous government shutdowns that affected the Department of Interior, administrations closed the parks rather than allow access unsupervised. Joshua trees already face threats of extinction from climate change.
Emily Douce, of the National Parks Conservation Association, told Vox that now-former Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke ordered to keep the national parks open during the shutdown to avoid the same criticism from 2013's shutdown.
I used to be stationed out there. I loved those trees. They'd been there for two thousand years, some of them.
You can see them for miles away; they're the only thing above knee-high. If you come from downwind you can catch the smell for over a mile: a little bit like cedar, but softer, and green, so perfectly green in that yellow-gray basin. Well, you could at least.
They cut them down and just fucking left them there. I don't know why this is hitting me so hard but it really is; I knew these exact trees, and some MAGA dipshit decided they were in the way of his fucking four wheeler.

(7,408 posts)All it takes is a long look at human history to see precedent. When you factor in a national culture built on avarice and rapaciousness -- "As one digs deeper into the national character of the Americans, one sees that they have sought the value of everything in this world only in the answer to this single question: how much money will it bring in?" -Alexis de Tocqueville, 1831 -- then things like this should be expected.
What has kept destruction at bay in the national parks for this last century hasn't been the will or work of a majority of the public, it's simply the threat of law enforcement and penalty. Once that is gone, we see America's id step from the shadows. Just like the scofflaws in Oregon that seized a protected area, were allowed to stay in place then a jury let them go without punishment.

(24,128 posts)from people, especially places like this.
There are so many beautiful places that should be left alone from people who treat them like personal gymnasiums or theme parks. Sentient beings and fauna grow and die in these places, and they should be left alone.
Now that park rangers aren't in our national parks to make sure things like this don't happen, moron people seem to be taking it to the hilt.
I guess I'm getting old, but people always picture themselves in wilderness areas as if they're on vacation or "conquering the wilderness" or some damn thing, and it's so much about them than the place they happen to be in. It's all about them.

The cutting was political. BET ON IT.

Who can feel love and awe in the presence of an amazing, ancient being.
It's something to grieve the planet's loss of habitat due to development, climate change, pesticides.
And now to have to grieve the loss of beautiful trees that our "social contract" agreed "Not these ones. These ones we will preserve, and hold sacred."
So we have to grieve the trees, who wanted only to provide beauty.
and grieve humans, who won't even be humans.

Joshua trees are yucccas....
They should grow back from the base. (Although they only grow at a rate of 1.5 inches per year)
Usually people who raid saguaros take them home and root them.

(15,805 posts)They are fragile with shallow roots and if they develop a multi branched crown they become top heavy and can be uprooted by our fierce desert winds. After nearly 50 years their growth is impercep, but one continues to blossom and regularly bear seed pods that I let germinate around the base. I have 10-12 heathly new little Joshua trees from 6" to 18" high.
I can't understand why people destroy something that could be hundreds of years old.

5 U.S. Code § 3331 - Oath of office
An individual, except the President, elected or appointed to an office of honor or profit in the civil service or uniformed services, shall take the following oath: I, AB, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God. This section does not affect other oaths required by law.

By failing to protect the parks -- keeping them open in spite of knowing they will be unprotected or under-protected -- it appears to me he failed to "well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office". These parks are supposed to be preserved and protected for all.

The national parks need to be closed. Fuck the people who bitch about it -- they're probably the same ones who want to ride their ATVs to chase the coyotes and destroy the delicate ground cover that will take decades to recover.
Trump is committed to destroying this country in every way he can. I don't believe in an afterlife, but for him I'll make an exception so I'll know he'll burn in hell for all eternity.
