"I may lose the farm, but I strongly feel we need some border security"

Farm Country Stood by Trump. But the Shutdown Is Pushing It to Breaking Point.
By Jack Healy and Tyler Pager
Jan. 10, 2019

...

Farm country has stood by President Trump, even as farmers have strained under two years of slumping incomes and billions in losses from his trade wars. But as the government shutdown now drags into a third week, some farmers say the loss of crucial loans, payments and other services has pushed them — and their support — to a breaking point.

While many rural conservatives may loathe the idea of Big Government, farmers and the federal government are welded together by dozens of programs and billions of dollars in spending.

Now, farmers and farm groups say that federal crop payments have stopped flowing. Farmers cannot get federally backed operating loans to buy seed for their spring planting, or feed for their livestock. They cannot look up new government data about beef prices or soybean yields to make decisions about planting and selling their goods in an ever-changing global market.

“This is real,” said Jeff Witte, president of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture and New Mexico’s agriculture secretary. “You had farmers who were in the process of closing a loan or getting an operating loan. Now there’s nobody there to service those.”

All week, Joe Schroeder has been listening to shutdown stories pouring into Farm Aid’s hotline. There was the cotton farmer who could not get disaster assistance to help him recover from Hurricane Michael. The woman in her 90s facing foreclosure on her family farm. The dairy farmer trying to make one last attempt to renegotiate her loan with the Farm Service Agency.

“You cannot reach anybody,” Mr. Schroeder said.

Mr. Trump is expected to address a largely friendly audience on Monday at the American Farm Bureau’s annual convention. Many farmers, including David Nunnery, 59, of Pike County, Miss., have stayed unflinchingly loyal to Mr. Trump and his demands for $5.7 billion for a border wall, even as the shutdown threatens their livelihood.

“I may lose the farm, but I strongly feel we need some border security,” Mr. Nunnery said.

We HAVE Border Security in like 5 redundant agencies. To say otherwise is ridiculous. I wonder if this guy isnt some stupe/dupe planted to lead the sheep. Farmers get subsidies and they cry about other stuff. Everybody is important. farmers, teachers, burger flippers. nobody has better title to the promise of America.
If this farmer cares so much about border security...hows he feel about trum importing illegals BLATANTLY? This farmer raises an eyebrow for me.

but many farmers do. Over half of all agricultural workers in the US are undocumented. If they want people to quit coming here illegally, employers shpuld quit hiring them.

Yet he is worried about immigrants who actually prop up the agriculture industry by providing hard working low paid laborers.

I do not want to wish ill on anyone but let the chips fall where they may on this guy. Democrats cannot give in on that stupid wall.

Asked Congress for more funds for border security, and Mitch and republicans refused. trump hires illegals at his properties, issues fake green cards to them , and does no background checks, but claims they are causing a crisis. HE pushes the putin plan by promoting dis-information , all false claims, to incite his followers with, then do like he did with the birther issue, repeats it over and over again. He repeats his lie he wants you to believe the most. If he's allowed to create make believe crisis , he'll use that as a weapon against us all in time. Just like putin did in russia. This isn't about a wall , its about gaining power he doesn't have , yet.

Clearly they haven't a clue that they are among the blue-ribbon recipients of the benefits of big government. They should only have to live under the system they think should be in place. They'd be starving in the streets.

I so despise the ignorance and the hypocrisy.

They see no hypocrisy in their thought process because they feel entitled because they are white. Their anti-government stance only applies to those "others".

I remember the story about Timothy McVeigh's partner in the Oklahoma federal building bombing, Terry Nichols and his brother, who live in Northern Michigan and who had received federal subsidies for their farm for years. Yet they were anti-government which gave them the notion of killing innocent people and tiny children for their whacked out belief system.

If Nunnery wants to sacrifice so Trump can enrich himself he can donate his estate to Trump, Trump's spawn, some anti-minority PAC, the GOP, etc.

Trump's arbitrary tariffs trying to bully US trading partners have little to do with border security. They have only slightly something to do with US economic security and mostly are in place to please Trump's ego to show Trump has power to fuck people over on the world stage if he does not get what he wants.
