This time of year, in 2007, Barack Obama announced his Presidential campaign.

...Because Obama announced so early, that is why these announcements are appearing. If Obama would have announced in June of 2007 as opposed to when he did announce, would it have made any difference? June would have been 6 months ahead of the Iowa primary. I really doubt it, but I don't know. that is one of the "if" questions that no one can answer. These announcements now seem to me to be ridiculous. How about April? One thing is for sure, the media loves these stories, because people look at them. As if a February announcement would matter as opposed to a June announcement.

Yes, you could probably announce formally and start campaigning in the summer, but staff building and organization takes time and money. The candidates who are serious are already reaching out to folks like me for financial commitments (or at least "get to know you" sessions), which means you have to be ready to file with FEC. And while you can always hedge about what your plans are (like Kamala Harris did this morning), everyone knows what's really happening, so why not announce when you're ready?

She was talking about her new book (what candidate for President DOESN'T come out with one) on MJ today, but wouldn't make commitments yet...

I deal with politics in the real world, and in that world candidates still have to raise money to run for office. I spend as much as I can to help get Democrats elected at every level from President down to State Auditor. As a result, a lot of these candidates seek me out for meetings. That gives me perspectives on campaigns that I'm generally able to share. Feel free to not to pay attention.

In the 2008 Primary, Iowa was threatening to move its Caucus to 2007 to keep it's first in the nation status. There's a lot of maneuvering that goes on up until the Fall.

The planners and their planners need to have jobs. But the planners are not necessarily smart. They are just..."planners"..
