Trump needs to go obviously, but this shutdown *could* be shut down if Mitch McConnell holds a vote on a clean CR. So far, however, McConnell is aiding and abetting Trump's shutdown by refusing to hold a vote, so he is just as guilty IMHO and, at some point, he needs to be held accountable for his dereliction of duty as well, especially if his constituents aren't going to hold his feet to the fire over this.

Retiring after his term is up? Most likely

(33,244 posts)McConnell is a fact of life. He's not going anywhere, even in 2020, and his power is only growing during this debacle.
A better question is: What does McConnell want?
The answer is easy: He wants more power.

(33,244 posts)Orange Co. ain't Hazard Co.
The Senate ain't the House.
Who are you going to run against him? The only viable Dem with a state-wide profile is Steve Beshear, the Gov. before the Tea Party asshole who's in power now.

(7,629 posts)of the current crop of corrupt actions of McConnell to start up a campaign against him -- whether or not you have a candidate to oppose him
But I get that CA ain't KY!!!

(3,252 posts)His unfavorabilty ratings are very high in his home state. He was won before because he had tons of money from PACS to pillory his opponent with nonstop BS and make them look worse than him. Without access to the Russian cash spigot it would be a lot harder. He has been around long enough to know the safest thing for the guilty to do is leave town. If the Democrats take the control of the Senate in 2020 and he stayed he would be a large target for investigations and possbile charges. If you take the money and run they have no power over you when you are no longer a member and no one else will care.
I actually hope I'm wrong in a way, since I would love to see him in the minority and watch him get his just deserts. But it just doesn't work that way in the America.

(43,049 posts)fat chance of that happening now.
It's possible he could be tossed out of office by the Senate, but that's even less likely.

(4,138 posts)A big part of the reason that he holds that position in the first place is that he has one of the safest seats in the Senate. He can afford to be a lightning rod that the "moderate" Senators in purple states can point to and say "not my fault, my hands are tied."
So yeah, fuck McConnell, but never forget that every single Republican senator has his back.

(94,333 posts)The Senate could choose to censure him or expel him, but that would require a majority of the Senate. Not likely to occur any time soon.
