Jesus was crucified by the Romans. His crime was being a potential political opponent of Rome - hence the charge posted on the cross "King of the Jews."

The references in the Gospels (predominantly Matthew) to Pilate bending to a mob calling for Jesus' crucifixion seems problematic. It is difficult to imagine why a Roman governor would be at all concerned with the views of a subjugated people.
