Records obtained from Maricopa County Superior Court state the woman has been a resident of the facility run by Hacienda HealthCare for more than 27 years — nearly double the length of time that appeared in previous reports.

The patient, who has been identified as a 29-year-old Native American, has been under the care of the facility since she was between ages 2-3, according to the documents, which also state that the woman suffers from quadriplegia, recurrent pneumonia and a seizure disorder.

It's a whole lot easier to deal with hygiene issues if they would have just given her birth control to stop the cycle.

When I was on birth control, it didn't "stop the cycle", it just either prevented ovulation or implantation of the egg. There is a kind (or kinds) that prevents menses now? First of all, that doesn't sound like it would be healthy to me. But anyway, failing that, why would they put her on any kind of birth control when there shouldn't have been any way for her to become pregnant?

Yes, it stops the cycle. Women do it to avoid menses. The only reason to have a period is if you plan on getting pregnant. I know I use to take it on date nights.

The baby was full term from other reports. So how could anyone caring for her not have noticed?

"The records show the patient received bowel treatment and care for years, and now, an inside source told us she had bowel obstruction surgery.

Valley gynecologist Dr. Greg Marchand said there's a common result from that kind of surgery.

“It is a surgery that classically can cause a lot of scar tissue,” Marchand said.

Several inside sources also told us over the past few months the patient had a "mass" on the side of her stomach.

Dr. Marchand said a pregnancy developing in that way is likely due to scar tissue.

“It could slightly change the direction of the uterus, for example if there was scar tissue on one side or the other, the uterus may tilt more in that direction,” he said.

As he continues to follow the case, he said while it's likely the pregnancy was on one side of her body due to her surgery, and may have looked like a "mass," there's no excuse for not knowing she was pregnant.

“I guess it could be mistaken for an abdominal tumor instead, but any tumor work-up at the beginning is going to require some kind of imaging, and that imaging is immediately going to give you the answer,” said Dr. Marchard."

Once a woman is far enough along in a pregnancy, anyone can see the woman's belly rolling around and moving with the movements of the fetus inside her.

There is no way that someone bathed this woman for MONTHS and never noticed this movement. Tumors and scar tissue don't act like fetuses. They don't move. And they don't FEEL like tumors or scar tissue, either. When you push on parts of a fetus inside a mother, you can feel it move in response. Tumors and scars don't do that.

Also, in the last half of the pregnancy, there are frequent Braxton-Hicks contractions, where the whole uterus gets very hard. Those are said to be "practice" for labor contractions -- and anyone touching her could have felt the difference.

"The court paperwork also lists phenobarbital as a medication the patient was on most of her life to control her seizures.

“Phenobarbital is a barbiturate. It is not known to cause any birth defects, but it can be very sedating for the baby,” he said.

Dr. Marchand said the sedative likely led to little fetal movement while the baby was inside the womb, and it also is likely the reason the emergency call came in for a baby who was coding when he was born.

“If a baby is sedated with anything, especially a barbiturate like phenobarbital, the baby could not want to do that and be very sleepy and not be able to breathe well,” he said."

But I still don't see how a full term fetus could have been overlooked. There would have been some movement, just less than usual. And the belly would have grown to accommodate the fetus. Why would they have thought the woman's belly was getting "fat"? Based on food coming though a tube? How likely would that be?

When your kids cyanotic it's not the time to educate yourself. It's an easy process. The rewards immeasurable.

Did she become pregnant and how could no one notice this? Completely crazy. That is good the baby’s grandparents will care for her.
