Now he is desperately seeking an exit.
Trump attempted Exit One on January 8. He spoke that evening to the nation from the Oval Office, hoping to mobilize public opinion behind him, pressing the Democratic leadership of the House to yield to him. That hope was miserably disappointed. Surveys post-speech found that Trump had swayed only 2 percent of TV viewers. In the 10 days since the speech, Trumps approval ratings have dipped to about the lowest point in his presidency. The supposedly solid Trump base has measurably softened.
Having failed to convince the public, Trump is now trying Exit Two. This idea is even more harebrained than the last, if that is even possible. Instead of appealing in prime time to the whole nation, Trump on Saturday afternoon advanced a detailed set of proposals intended to shift a critical mass of backbench Democrats to break with their leadership and deal directly with him. You dont need to do much more than articulate the idea out loud to appreciate its utter unrealism.

(149,531 posts)The 'proposal' contains no new language on the Dreamers, much less any new ideas for a path to citizenship and safety from being deported.
Why on earth does he think we might be tempted to agree to stuff we've already seen and rejected?
Idiot.

(25,183 posts)then he keeps the government shut down until his last day in office. And his base lauds him for that, then they find a new champion at the next opportunity, buoyed by how well it worked having Trump as their wrecking ball.
If we take a form of this deal, we get folks safe until the grownups can get back in the White House in 2021. Is it a hostage situation? Perhaps, but even in those situations, the first priority is the safety of the hostages. You can "get" the bad guys by blowing up the plane, but you kill all of the hostages, too.

(25,183 posts)what would be one? Total capitulation by Trump with zero to show for it? Out of the goodness of his heart and with mercy for government workers? In what alternate universe does that Donald Trump exist? Oh, and I'm not Speaker of the House in that one, either.

(33,262 posts)They are not completely roasted yet, but they are feeling the fire.
McConnell has been sighted and has contradicted himself by stating a bill will be voted on, in spite of it being rejected by Democrats.
Pelosi's approval is higher than Trump's, in spite of a concerted RW propaganda attack that has been relentless.

(25,183 posts)after Coulter, etc. have all gone bananas over this deal and are trying to recruit a new Trump to primary him?
He makes this deal, and he's up to his ass in alligators over the fallout from the reich-wing talking heads. He may try to salvage his presidency by abandoning the base and sucking up to the Never-Trumpers who have been waiting for him to grow up in the job.
What will he demand from us then, and what will he have left to offer? And, we'll only be a year away from replacing him.
What if Speaker Pelosi and Senator Schumer can extract a two year deal from him? Would you take it, then?

(25,183 posts)What's yours? Do you think Trump will someday just sign a continuing resolution with nothing to show for it? If you think Ann Coulter is savaging him now, just wait until that happens!
He's too prideful, too egotistic, and too selfish to ever do such a thing. He has to feel that he got something out of the deal, or he walks away from it. Government workers cannot go for two years without a paycheck.
How do you see a preferable, yet possible, end to this?

(36,674 posts)Republicans are desperate to co-opt the democrats in funding Trumps wall.
The GOP absolutely does not want complete credit for such funding.
