Divers have Close Encounter" with one of the largest white sharks on record. w/ photograph

A team of divers has had a close encounter with one of the biggest great white sharks on record - and lived to tell the tale.

Some of the divers came so close to the female shark in the waters off Hawaii that they were able to touch it.

The shark, nearly 20ft (6m) long and weighing an estimated 2.5 tonnes, is believed to be one tagged by researchers about 20 years ago called Deep Blue.

It was attracted to the area off Oahu's south shore by the carcass of a dead sperm whale.

One of the divers, Ocean Ramsey, told the Honolulu Star Advertiser that they had been filming tiger sharks feeding on the whale when the shark arrived.

Many species of seal are favorite items on the great white shark menu.

Mysterious interstellar object floating in space might be alien, say Harvard researchers
USA Today NetworkBrett Molina, USA TODAY

It's been dubbed a comet, an asteroid, and a new class of interstellar object. Now, a paper from Harvard astronomers suggests one more possibility into the mysterious object nicknamed "Oumuamua": Alien probe.

Researchers focused on whether solar radiation pressure could explain the unusual acceleration of "Oumuamua," the first object entering the Earth's solar system from interstellar space.

The paper said if solar radiation pressure is the reason "Oumuamua" is moving at high speeds, it represents "a new class of thin interstellar material" either made naturally or through artificial means.

The paper's authors, which include Avi Loeb, chair of Harvard's astronomy department, suggest the object could be a "lightsail" used to propel spacecraft with solar energy.

Which is apparently the safest kind to be around, especially when their hunger is satiated as apparently hers was.

And that there Are not really known examples of a great white feeding on humans unless it was a case of mistaken identity. Even when an attack is fatal, which obviously one by a shark like this probably would be, they don’t come back and finish up as they realize their mistake.

That said, it seems batshit crazy to me!

And bet dollars to donuts they would not do this with a Bull Shark! They will gladly eat a human and too often do. As do several other species like the Oceanic White Tip.

I see and catch many sharks on our boat. Except for an occasional small Black Tip which are delicious and not protected nor endangered, all are released unharmed. I like seeing people trying to make them seem like what they are, a fellow passenger on the planet, not a monster.

I have not had the occasion to be around this particular kind of shark, but as a diver I frequently encounter sharks. The question I am universally asked is, "aren't you scared?" The answer is generally, no. No reason to be afraid unless the shark has been trained that people are food - or I'm behaving inappropriately toward it.

Sharks are hyped to the point where we treat them as universally dangerous - rather than the magnificiant fellow passengers on the planet they are.
