Let's take another look at that video of the MAGATs from yesterday:

They don't look the least bit intimidated or traumatized. They look like the typical Trump rally people, only
younger. Please don't let DU get 'Fox newsed' with whataboutism.

These posters are suggesting that those 5 idiots were "just as bad" and their unfortunate exercise of Freedom of Speech makes the boys' assault on Mr. Phillips understandable and not horrifying.

These posters are insisting, "Watch the whole thing." I concur. Watch the whole thing. These kids are Hitler Youth. There is no excuse for what they did.

The internet doesn't work that way - and it especially doesn't work that way for kids who are misidentified and doxed.

They should absolutely be disciplined, up to and including expulsion. I have no problem with their disciplinary records impacting their immediate ability to go to college. But widespread doxing and exposure will make it nearly impossible for them to legitimately change because they will never be able to escape their past.

I'm sure there aren't any untoward incidents in your youth that you would rather not have everyone in your present to have access to and judge you by.

Not to mention, the kind of exposure you are suggesting risks creating the kind of damage that has already done to at least one boy who had nothing do with the incident is also irreparable.

I sat in classrooms with jerks like these kids, they did not change until they got repeated shunning. They were always the "victims", even when they were clearly the aggressors. I have no concern about their future, when they truly change, a person of a decent heart will be able to talk to them and look into their eyes and see that they have changed. Them not facing the total measure of their conduct only reinforces a belief that seem to exist that they can skate past bad conduct. It is high time that brutish conduct be met with forceful shunning, else expect a lot more "leaders" of the character of Trump.

BTW, I have no fear of my teen decisions, my early adult decisions or my decisions today being made public. I have made decisions throughout my life that I am not ashamed of.

repeated shaming within the classroom, within the family, within the community is very different than internet shaming.

And - if you think publically available negative information is so easy to overcome, why are so many felons homeless and unable to find work? Are all of those landlords and employers not people with decent hearts?

Facing consequences is different from intentional shaming (although facing consequences will oftem result in sham), and even intentionalhy shaming is different from internet shaming.

I agree with facing consequences. I do not agree with intentionally shaming (not even within the familiy or community). Intentionaly shaming is used far too frequently as a weapon to accomplish behavior modificiation for LGBT youth.

As for not having events in your youth you are ashamed of, you are uncommon. I don't either - but in that respect I am unlike most of my peers.

They can't make statements that their actions don't back up. I believe in the basic decency of most people and I have a sense of when a person is trying to mislead my when I am talking to them face to face.

Shunning of LGBTQ people is wrong and the people that do it should be confronted and shunned themselves. Some or all of the boys at that school either were involved of or approved of the shunning of a teen that had come out as Gay. Do you think shielding them from this current action will make them better people? I absolutely don't, they are encoding brutish behavior as correct and they will continue to do that until they face unrelenting pressure.

In regards to ex felons, I have dealt with a few. In regards to hiring a person, I start with the person in front of me and use things like background checks and drug testing to help inform my decisionmaking (yes, I do think those things are useful if used properly, a person that lies about his or her past or lies about drug use will likely not tell the truth at a critical time). I am not concerned about a person using Pot or having an addiction, I am more concerned about whether my assessment is that it will affect how they perform a job, I can make that assessment only by reading the person in front of me. In the case of an ex felon, I would assess whether the person has changed and if my assessment is that they have it are making an earnest effort to change for the better, there is absolutely no moral justification for denying them a job, or the right to vote or other societal rights. But those Covington kids humiliated a Gay kid, then later stood on the National Mall insulting a military veteran because they saw him as an other, they HAVE NOT changed and they must pay a price for that and keep paying that price until they have sincerely changed.

and internet shaming that will last forever. Your response with respect to felons tells me that you really don't understand the implications of life-long negative public records - and since that's the closest to what you suggest these kids should be subjected to, there's not much hope for getting the point across.

Sure hope you never do anything stupid - or are not mistaken for someone who did something stupid. But the reality is that it may take that before you understand the enormity of the lifelong consequences you are suggesting should follow these kids that will make it much more difficulty for them to make any meaningful change.

Like anyone else, ex felons that have done their time and show a willingness to become fully functional in society deserve a fair shot at jobs, housing and other rights that a person that has never done a crime deserve. If that position isn't clear to you, I don't know what else to say.

The Covington kids should face public pressure until it is clear that they have changed. If that does not happen, from what I read of what one of their parents have said, there will be nothing in their lives to induce them to change and they will continue to disrespect "others" or worse.

I will agree to disagree with you on this issue, it is clear to me that your thoughts on it are heartfelt, but so are mine.

The Net still has record of their earlier lives, but their current behavior has gained them respect. According to your premise that was impossible because both were once extensively reviled online. Sorry, I don't agree with that premise.

Nobody said anything there after he quit speaking either. This is what happens when you give the gop an inch. I was appalled then. Whats in it for the Tribal Chiefs? More pipelines through Sacred Ground? Please. Sen. Warren was told by her Mom and Dad she had Indian blood in her. She didn't just make it up. I tend to believe my parents about family history too. Theres been little to nothing said when dt makes fun of Pocahontas. And it bleeds down to supporters that think Indian Culture is something to just joke about. EW corrected her mistake and the Indian Leaders let their cultural icons be used for nasty attacks. They were a LOT of them there. Nobody jumped up, corrected him, or even walked out. Its imperative to protect the culture bc it shows respect for ALL of it, as a body of history, and who were here first.
Pretty sure if dt said...honor the Indian history and be grateful to those tribes who were here first, show respect, this would have had a lot less chance of happening. IMHO...bc everyone has to say that now (On a page where its almost all news and opinions) bc folks want to fight about shit and get folks here flamed. IMHO. See my signature line, and also, if things I say bug you. Please block me. Im not offended.

Because they would have been taught from birth to not get involved in stuff like that, or to step in and do the right thing. It would have been a powerful statement if one of those kids had gone to Mr. Phillip's side and faced down his classmates and explained to them that what they were doing was wrong.

I am not trying to pat myself on the back, but when I was a second term freshman in college, I saw a big group of kids writing something about our professor on the wall in front of his lecture hall. After I assessed what was going on, I ripped a piece of paper out of one of my notebooks and moved through the crowd to face the kid that was writing the stuff. I told him that what he was doing was wrong, that he should talk to the professor if he had issues. I then wet the paper and ran it through some dirt that had fallen off someone's shoes, then I erased what had been written in front of the big group of students that had been laughing at what was being written. If I had a child, that is the type of character that I would want him or her to display. A lot of times doing the right thing is situations isn't easy, if I were a parent, I would constantly talk to my child about the dynamics of that, but in the end, I would expect him or her to make the morally correct decision (regardless of the situation, there are only one or two possible decisions among many that meet that criteria) and I would make that clear to him or her.

Those preacher guys were definitely just trash talking everyone and trying to get as much attention as possible. Their message was entirely incendiary and it was designed to rile people up. You can't reason with people who use those methods and it is pointless to try.

The white kids did the whole HAKA thing that they learned in school presumably, I'm guessing because the shirtless kid was hearing the message and sense the mob getting upset. Before and while this is happening the preacher dudes are spewing total hate.

Then the native American guy comes and plays a calming Indian chant to make everyone chill the fuck out. The preacher guys were like "wow it worked" and, while they were calling the Indians demon worshipers and having false idols not even an hour earlier, they stood in amazement. Then, in their hilarious manipulation, they start pointing out the kids acting stupid toward the Indian guy. These are the same guys who championed genocide against an entire peoples because of their false idols not even an hour earlier.

The kids were acting stupid before the chanting happened and continued to act stupid after. The close up shots of them are embarassing and they should be punished for it.
