How one school district is responding to a racism and sexual assault

What might be useful at Covington - but I'm not holding my breath.

This district is in Arizona. (Disclosure: a family member is a teacher in the district.) After a hazing incident at one of the "best" high schools involving sexual assault, the district and school weathered harsh criticism and criminal investigations against the perpetrators. Staff also faced charges for failure to report.

Info on incident:

On top of this, the same school faced charges of racism.

And students at a junior high school posted a video of them singing racist lyrics to a song.

In response, the district initiated a "deep equity" training program for staff and students. Staff development days are devoted to this training. Student meetings are supposed to begin next year. The link below is to the district's plan. Beyond the somewhat vague descriptions, the actual training has involved deep discussions of bias with and by staff in small working groups.

...commit hate, racist, bigoted offenses. In an interview with PBS civil rights activist Harry Belafonte said ..."To realize Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream, white America needs to change course. The case is that we have to fix it. The fact is that it's not fixable if white folks don't decide to change their course of conduct...."
