Amazing interactive of the US-Mexico Border from WAPO: Please take the time to look at it.

I think you might be amazed at just how much you didn't appreciate about the border terrain and realities even if you've spent time in many of the border towns lining both sides of the border from Texas to California.

even though I always checked in with customs as required, the truth is that there's really not much control except voluntary.

In the last census, about 25% of Florida was born outside of the US. At this point, the only rational solution is a legal path to citizenship.
