Mathew Slatter is the special team's captain and the union representative for the New England Patriots.
In the second half of the 2018-2019 Championship Game in Kansas City, both quarterbacks, the Pats Tom Brady and the Chiefs Patrick Mahone were nearly unstoppable in the fourth quarter. The game ended in a tie.
Slatter called the toss of the coin which would determine who gained the first possession in overtime. A touchdown on the first possession would end the game. Slatter called heads, and heads it was. That was the single most important call of the game.
Brady marched his team down the field to the game winning touchdown and Mahone never got to touch the ball again, because of Slatter's call.
