(90,335 posts)...way of his path where the NA stopped and continued drumming.
The boys in the end began mocking and taunting the NA drummer and things got disgusting from there.
Some here and elsewhere are trying to conflate the NA drummer with the BHI idiots and claim A the BHI idiocy justifies the B CCHS students taunting the NA drummer and the Sandmann standing in his walking path.
The chaperones should've stepped in and diverted the boys attention and energy at minimum.
This was a very poor show of chaperoning best

(61,598 posts)I saw it myself. Smirking, taunting, mock Indian dancing, blocking the drummer's path, yelling "build the wall", wearing MAGA hats.
Also, the entire school trip was to harass women by participating in parade against reproductive rights.
Quite a busy day filled with harassment.

There are decades worth of studies regarding what happens when others "invade" someone's "space" and the variations of the reaction that occurs that depend on age, sex/orientation, religion (or non-), race/ethnicity, and culture.

(145 posts)The kids were harassing a number of people, mostly people of color. They were told by bystanders to stop. The Native American drummer stood and began singing prayer songs when the mob turned towards him and the incident in the noe famous videos happened.
Thats eyewitnesses folks. Let Fox News spin it but thats what they all saw

(16,423 posts)When Trump rants on Twitter, he doesn't address us. He's shouting every random thought unfiltered into the universe and we happen to be there. Trump is not even trying to make sense, because he doesn't care whether we understand him or not.
The same with this guy.
He was supposed to give a comment and he gave a comment for giving a comment's sake. It doesn't matter if it makes sense or not.
Other example:
A company fucks up and issues a statement that has nothing to do whatsoever with the incident.
The parent company of the Machinima Youtube-channel has deleted 7 years worth of videogame-culture on Youtube. When the inevitable public outcry came, the company said that they love making videos. Not a single word that they deleted those videos or why they deleted those videos.

(2,580 posts)"The first thing you need to know about Covington Catholic High School is that it is an elite private boys school with an expensive tuition.
But the second thing you need to know is that it is as close to a "whites only" school as you can find in the 21st Century.
I talked to one former #CovingtonCatholic high school student who is of middle eastern descent.
He got bullied and called a "terrorist." It got so bad he had to transfer schools.
And he wasn't alone. Every year the school has only a minority students (in a school of 500).
#CovingtonCatholic's race problem is not limited to the almost all-white student body however.
Before the school hastily removed its teachers directory yesterday, I reviewed it.
Every. Single. Teacher. Is. White.
(at least of those 80 listed yesterday before they took it down)
I censored all the individual teachers email addresses. But here's an email address I won't be censoring.
This is the principal of #CovingtonCatholic, who has hired a teaching staff that is as far as I can tell, whites only. His school culture seems to be deeply racially toxic.
After video surfaced of #CovingtonCatholic kids apparently harassing a Native American elder, people were angry at the students (understandably).
The school was quick to issue a statement saying it might expel some students involved.
But that's not gonna fix their race problem.
I am sure the teachers at #CovingtonCatholic are hard working people and they don't deserve anyone's scorn per-say.
But the school itself needs to reckon with how an a nearly all-white atmosphere can lead to, at the very least, "blind spots" in these kids' racial awareness.
While we're at it, we also need to talk about gender at #CovingtonCatholic.
I have heard from members of the community there is an ingrained sexism problem at the school (which refers to women as "females" .
Cov students have also harassed gay students at other schools.
This is 73 year old Bishop Foys, in charge of the diocese that the school is a part of.
One former student told me he's uncomfortable with women and girls getting leadership positions at his schools. There was also a story about a rapist that was allowed to "walk" graduation."

People are responding so strongly to these videos because they are so emblematic of the violence that indigenous people have suffered for over 500 years in the United States. We have been raped, relocated, trafficked, separated, degraded, demoralized, and massacred by the United States government and a culture of media, economy, education, and religion that has dehumanized indigenous people for the entire history of this stolen country. Presently, this country continues to poison indigenous people by defiling our water and pumping drugs and alcohol into indigenous communities; regulate native bodies through tribal numbers and blood quantum laws; and force assimilation (culturally, spiritually).
These are tactics of genocide. An ongoing, unrecognized genocide.
These videos are a brutal reminder of a very real unfinished battle that indigenous people are still fighting. We are fighting to be acknowledged, to be counted, to be part of the future. Quite simply, we are fighting to exist.
But these videos are also a testament: a testament to the bravery, dignity, grace, strength, passion, and power of indigenous people. Leaders like Nathan are essential to the survival of indigenous people because they hold experience of our history and traditions. Indigenous elders have given their lives to protect our identities, our sovereignty, our lands, our people, our ways of being, only to be met time and time again with violence or at the very least, the smug, smirking faces of our oppressors like the boys of Covington Catholic High School.
