(6,851 posts)Thats fine but they wouldnt be throwing a 3 point sign to the opposite team in-bounding the ball. **** and if their team had just hit a 3, the other player would be inbounding from under the basket, not the side. Theres no rational explanation for the white power sign here. No excuse for being on the court. Someone else pointed out the adult is from Catholic team. He needs to be out of there. I at first thought he was a red team coach.
Granted, vicious taunting is part of basketball ... violation of space and racial taunting are inexcusable.

The hatefulness in those kids faces is what disturbs me. And, there's no excuse for them being allowed to put on blackface. After reading up on the event in DC, it appears this school openly sanctions using kids to promote racism and right-wing dogma. This not only endangers these children's futures, but also (in the DC case) their safety.

(8,682 posts)I havent been in school in a very long time and have very little memories of spirit week. There are a lot of articles out there of schools having a blackout day during spirit week. And kids taking it to far by painting themselves black as well, especially their face.
It seems most schools forbid the practice of completely painting your face, any color, at a school event.
Not defending this obviously, just that it is a bad practice, their parents and other adults should know better and the intent may be taken out of context.
This a lot more about poor adulting than racist kids.
Why?
Because kids are not racist at birth.
Racism, hate and apathy are taught.
These kids are surrounded by racist, hateful and apathetic adults.
Doesnt excuse their behavior or make it ok. Its just context.
What they need is real adults teaching them that this kind of shit is racist and hateful. Not standing there and letting it happen. Or worse, encouraging it.
Its shameful that McConnell, married to a person of color, in Kentucky, would not be out in front of all this trying to defuse and educate these young people and their deplorable adults that are supposed to guide and shape them.
Its shameful and sad.

(58,724 posts)University of Colorado faculty leaders may consider whether the use of black face paint at sporting events is school spirit or racially insensitive and reminiscent of "blackface" costumes.
The Boulder Faculty Assembly's diversity committee has raised the concern that, on multiple occasions, "blackface" costumes have been displayed at sporting events and on Pearl Street during Halloween.
But students who have worn black body paint to past football games say they're simply showing school spirit and supporting the Buffs, whose colors are black and gold.

(61,539 posts)The racists may be telling this "black out game" story to the public, but the kid who painted big wide lips on his blackface and outlined his eyes with white circles knew exactly what he was doing. And so did all his white friends. And so do I.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)Did they ever do this at games which were not "blackout" games?
Should be simple to figure out with pictures from other games in which the spectators are not all dressed in black.

(62,444 posts)If I had to guess what the purpose of that post is, my guess would be to point out that so-called "blackout" games are a thing in basketball. It's why everyone else in the pictures of blackout games are dressed in black. So, persons who might otherwise be inclined to paint themselves in the school color will likewise paint themselves in black.
That's just my guess, though.

Knowing parts of Kentucky as I do, I'm guessing that photo was taken by a press photographer and due to it's controversial nature, some people were instructed to bury it and perhaps not even archive it.
It's a damn shame that the behavior in that school still exists and in fact is officially sanctioned in many, many communities in today's America. It's double the shame that it exists within a religious organization (but then, we do have our evangelicals).
