It's a genuine worry these days, now that they have examples of people like themselves carrying out violent acts. I understand there are even online communities where they feed on each others' miseries.

every gun tragedy. Guns don't kill people, people do....yadda yadda. However, they refuse to fund it on federal, state and local levels. I have two pre-teen granddaughters and it really bothers me that there are more guys like this out there that are communicating with each other. Maybe his Facebook postings were in some way a cry for help. That is the only halfway positive way I can look at this.

I mean, they can probably hold him for a while, maybe get him involved in group and/or individual therapy, medicate him, try to change his mindset to the point he no longer wants to murder women, (this would be the approach at the psychiatric hospital where I worked) but at some point he's back on the streets. I just hope he goes through some much needed changes as a result of his arrest and stops being a threat.

Millennials are isolated and it is hard to meet people. We live in a society of fear and distrust. A large part of that is caused by the sensationalist media reporting making it look like every young man is going to rape or kill you and this is another example. It's the same with drug abuse; instead of treating the problem we cram people into jail.

I hope you can explain it to me. I'm a GenX-er. By the strict definition, I was an incel during the early to mid 1990s. No, I didn't act like these so-called incel assholes today, but I was indeed involuntarily celibate. I was painfully shy around women and felt very insecure talking to them, other than the most trivial small talk. I'd had a couple of girlfriends in high school, but it never went far, and my ability to talk to women got worse in college. I never had a gf in college. There was no meeting women online in those days. You'd only meet other nerdy guys online. You had to go up and talk to women in real life. So I'd sit around with my other shy male friends and we'd complain about our situations. In retrospect, our situations were totally fixable. We just didn't realize it.

I met someone in an internship just after college, we dated and married. In the few years that followed, online dating really took off, and my still-single male friends found their significant others online. My marriage lasted 7 years, and then we split with no kids. I was despondent that I'd be back in the same situation I had been in prior to meeting her: no way to meet women, perpetual loneliness. Then I went online. Compared to how it was before online dating, it was so easy to meet a woman who would go out with me. Ridiculously easy. And if you just wanted a one night stand (not that I recommend that), there were women looking for that too. After 4 months in the online dating world, I met the woman I would marry for the 2nd time around (so far so good).

My point is, I just do not understand what is hard about meeting women these days. It is easier than ever. You can meet people whose interests are more aligned with yours, rather than relying on chance encounters. If these kids only knew how hard we had it back in the day....

Wrong. I'm in a town with at least 3 times the amount of men as women. I've been stood up several times. I'm on dating websites and have sent messages to over 10 women- not a single one has ever responded. Get out of your bubble.

And I appreciate your insight. It would be difficult in small towns, and even worse with the male-female ratio as you describe. I was in a metro area of population 1.5 million in my 2nd single phase, and I'm sure that made it easier. I wonder if more incels are from smaller town and rural areas?

The best part about it is just meeting and talking to different women. I don't know how many dates I went on while online dating. But it was a LOT! I can remember showing up to a date and immediately thinking this isn't going to go far because I'm not attracted but I always had a great time just sharing some time with the person. There were an unbelievable number of ambulance and police sirens. All I could think of was that there must have been one hellacious pileup on the freeway -- and the next day we all knew what happened in Isla Vista.

Newsflash: Nobody is "owed" sex or "owed" female companionship in this life by being born male. And one certainly doesn't get what one wants by stewing in ones own juices and radiating hate. It hurts to end up alone when you didn't intend to, but murder is not the answer.

A person who seeks relatedness will usually find it by being an adequate human being who shows an interest in other people as human beings. Even most shy and slightly awkward people manage it eventually.
