Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsTrump has no intention of re-opening the Government.
At least anytime soon. My view is that he sees this as a successful diversion and delay of the Mueller investigation.
We all know that the modern GOP (and what a contradiction that phrase is!!) hates the idea of a Government that regulates the rich in any way.
The GOP wants the protection of the US military because the business interests of the 1% demand it, but the GOP has no use for social service programs.
The GOP is the party of the rich.

(3,344 posts)The president's vote is not required to re-open the government. AOC knew where to focus attention, by going to the Senate. All the Dems should ignore Trump and focus on Mitch.

I fully agree!! Mcturtle needs to be pressed to call for a VOTE! Not on RUMPS bill but on the House version!!

(23,944 posts)we really dug a deep hole for ourselves in 2016. we aren't getting out of this without sacrifice and misery. i guess it's just a question of how much the nation can take while remaining committed to being a nation. impossible to know in advance, i suppose we find out now.

(5,754 posts)and they don't all fly private. Folks who work for TSA will not be able to keep coming in. Now they can't give out information on the percent who call in sick. If you have to wait 3-4 hours at security, the system can't work. That might happen very soon. I think the house should pass a bill to pay all airport and airline related folks and see if McConnell will bring it up.

(37,748 posts)NFL has a waiver signed by host city to pick up the security tab, and the event is considered by the government to be second to (ironically enough) the State of the Union Address in terms of its threat rating.
If recent superbowl's are any indication, the Secret Service, FBI, TSA, ICE, and Customs and Border Protection in addition to city police and county sheriff's departments are all involved. Last year, the direct-dollar sum for security was just over $7 million.
Given that this year's even takes place in the city with the busiest airport in the US, the cost could be even higher.

(6,110 posts)But my reason is slightly different. His main goal is to keep pushing hard to follow his campaign promises. He is many things (narcissistic, stubborn, rude, heartless etc) but he is not stupid. He correctly has concluded that his base will jump off his ship in droves if he caves on campaign promises and then his chance of re-election is zero to none.
Therefore I see no chance he caves on the Wall and opens the government. Working through McFconnell has a better chance.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)One possibility.

(6,110 posts)That gives Trump a way to save face with his base. He can blame lack of wall on someone else, not him caving in.

(6,110 posts)he is the best face ever. But that is not the point.
The point is Trump is aware that only hope he has of re-election is to hold on to his base.
If there is even a small perception that he is caving on his campaign promises, he is toast.
Which is why I do not expect him to open the gov't until Jan 2021 unless forced by congress.

(10,885 posts)of the Mueller investigation", is irrelevant. Mueller does what Mueller does, whether tRump shuts
down the government or has a naked gorilla marching down the street with bells on his toes proclaiming his innocence. tRump may feel it's a diversion, but that just shows how foolish and uninformed he is about Mueller's methods and plan of action. It's just another example of his stupidity if he thinks anything he does now will redirect or overthrow Mueller's investigation in any way. Mueller has brains and focus, both of which are sorely lacking in the criminal.
