Today, lots of companies and organizations use a person's credit rating as a quick substitute to determine a person's character. That is, poor credit = bad person/poor risk. That has real world consequences for everyone, like how much you pay for all types of insurance, the interest you pay on a loan, if you get hired/fired and so on, not just for federal civil servants.

There is no doubt that some of furloughed employees are going to take a hit to their credit rating if they can't make loan, utility or credit card payments.
