Georgia hunter threatened over photos with dead elephant speaks out

An energy executive and safari hunter said he's received death threats after photos of him with a dead elephant sparked backlash on social media. Mike Jines, a partner with TopGen Energy in Georgia, said his critics are misinterpreting what really happened during a hunt in Zimbabwe, CBS affiliate WGCL-TV reports.

Jines said he and another hunter named Buzz shot two adult elephants in self-defense when they charged them during a hunt in October 2018. "The two elephant that are shown in the photos were shot in self-defense, in an unprovoked charge and both elephants were fully mature cows, not juveniles," he told WGCL in an email.

Jines said he and his company are now dealing with the fallout and making sure people understand the "actual facts as opposed to the mischaracterization of the information on social media."

Jines said the elephants were killed in a designated safari area and was conducted in compliance with laws and regulations in both Zimbabwe and the U.S. He called the majority of the responses to the images "profane" and "threatening."

Zimbabwe is a rather corrupt country. As to the self defense argument, it takes a rather large caliber gun to take an elephant down. If you had such a firearm with you it's probable your intent was to hunt elephants.

I avoid this problem by not going on hunting safaris in Zimbabwe.

In fact, my method of avoiding charging elephants has proven much more effective and risk free than his method. (that and taking away their credit cards)

But, I agree with you. There's nothing more annoying than being charged by elephants during an elephant hunt.

Now why would female elephants "charge" guys in their territory? usually to defend calves. Wonder what others those guys shot at.

The Selkirk Foundation, which has been saving baby elephants for decades now, has talked about the damage to existing and future elephants because the females have been decimated in a hunt for ivory.

I am thrilled at the blowback on trophy hunters.

The elephants had a lot of nerve, walking around in their natural habitat.

Anyone in today's day and times should always be aware that humans are showing more love and compassion towards animals then humans. You might wanna think twice before killing them because I can see a whole bunch of people wanting to open up a can of Woop~Ass on you! Just saying you like a pig more then the local farming pig.

Maybe they really wanted a lion? I've watched a lot of shows about elephants and I don't recall them charging in pairs. Usually one charges and the others keep the young ones safe. Funny how people want to do whatever the hell they want, say whatever the hell they want then turn into little snowflakes when they get called out on it. I don't agree with death threats but pulling all support from his company and socially ostracizing him seems fair.

It takes a real man to own up to the deed.

Guess we know which one you are, Jines.

PS. Be on the lookout for a pair of tweezers and a microscope in the mail.
