Time to quit calling it a shutdown, this is a lockout

It's just like the old factory owners that would lock the gates to bust unions or worker movements. Trump complains about the "Deep State" and this is his way to break them.

Look at the affected workers, they are in law enforcement, regulatory agencies, and the IRS. Surprise, that's where he has the greatest risk to his fortune and freedom.

In all honesty, immigration means nothing to him. This is all about ego and his racist base.

He's already threatening emergency powers to build his wall. What would he do if faced with a general strike?

He thinks he's Mussolini, it would get ugly quickly.

They're being forced to work for no pay. Only the government can force employees to work without paying them. Private companies that don't meet their payroll find themselves with no workers.

Think about that...

It started before President Obama took office.

Some of the low points:

The continual attacks and dismemberment of the ACA.
Numerous previous shutdowns and the hobbling of important government services.
The blocking of the nomination of a Supreme Court Justice.
Voter suppression.
Travel bans.
Violation and backing out of decades old treaties with allies.
Sanctions lifted.

and so forth.

The mystery now is why there's not more uproar from the rest of the Senate.
