What Other Employers Can Force Employees to Work without Pay?

While I understand that federal employees in "essential" jobs can't go on strike, where does the federal government get the right to force those employees to show up and work without paying them on time?

Those "essential" employees are being held as hostages for Trump's ransom demands. The work they do is "essential," but so is the money they earn for that work.

Donald Trump's "Wall" is nothing more than an extortion scheme. Extortion is a high crime.

It's time to end this illegal forced labor.

I'm guessing when the Democrats have control of both the House and Senate there will be a number of new laws regarding shutdowns and pay for government employees. Until then, we will be stuck with the status quo. Republicans are "free lunchers" and strongly believe in unpaid labor and excruciatingly low wages. If they could get away with it, they would likely be the party of slavery.

The rules of the Senate are beyond stupid when they let the Majority Leader block bills from even getting a vote, unless the vote will go the way he wants it to. That's the key to this entire problem. The Senate would gladly pass bills that end the shutdown by a large majority, but McConnell is blocking a vote on any of them.
