Monica Crowley: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a "monster" that Democrats won't be able to control

Oh, brother. I like AOC even more now.

Monica Crowley: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a “monster” that Democrats won't be able to control
A far-right journalist slams the newly-elected Democratic socialist as "too big for her britches" in a new op-ed

This article originally appeared on AlterNet.

When a Monica Crowley op-ed with the headline “Newly Elected and Too Big for Her Britches” appeared in the Washington Times this week, it wasn’t hard to guess who the far-right journalist was referring to. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who was sworn into Congress on January 3, has been the subject of countless attack pieces on right-wing websites. And sure enough, AOC is the one Crowley goes after in her op-ed, which expresses her disdain not only for the 29-year-old congresswoman, but the Millennial generation in general.

Ocasio-Cortez, as she sees it, is a prime example of what Crowley calls Tall Poppy Syndrome. Crowley explains, “Tall Poppy Syndrome occurs when someone gets cut down to size after becoming too big for her britches, too important too fast, too superior to those around her. The tall poppy must be pruned back, lest she think she can easily dominate her peers. She must be taught a lesson.”

And Crowley goes about trying to teach Ocasio-Cortez a lesson, employing an abundance of anti-Millennial imagery to make her point.

“With her relative youth, Taylor Swift red lipstick, deft use of social media and unapologetic embrace of socialism,” Crowley writes, Ocasio-Cortez “became an instant political celebrity. The mainstream media panted after her and her radical ideas — Medicare for all, a green ‘new deal,’ a 70% tax rate — her dripping sarcasm on Twitter and even her announcement of a ‘self-care’ break before being sworn in.”

snip//

One older liberal Crowley doesn’t quote in her op-ed is veteran economist and New York Times economist Paul Krugman. On Twitter, the 65-year-old Krugman addressed GOP disdain for Ocasio-Cortez when he posted that Republicans’ “insecurity in the face of a bright, charismatic woman of color is spectacular. I particularly like the constant claims that she’s stupid when, let’s face it, the average GOP House member knows as much about policy as the average house pet.”

Crowley ends her op-ed on an especially overwrought note, characterizing Ocasio-Cortez as a “monster” the Democratic Party will be unable to control.

“The Democratic establishment, which long winked at socialism and encouraged youth activism, now realizes that it’s created a monster it won’t be able to control for much longer,” Crowley insists. “As Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is demonstrating, the Tall Poppy can be pruned back, but it eventually grows back taller than before.”

Trump national security pick Monica Crowley plagiarized multiple sources in 2012 book

Conservative author and television personality Monica Crowley, whom Donald Trump has tapped for a top national security communications role, plagiarized large sections of her 2012 book, a CNN KFile review has found.

The review of Crowley’s June 2012 book, "What The (Bleep) Just Happened," found upwards of 50 examples of plagiarism from numerous sources, including the copying with minor changes of news articles, other columnists, think tanks, and Wikipedia. The New York Times bestseller, published by the HarperCollins imprint Broadside Books, contains no notes or bibliography.

Crowley did not return a request for comment. In an update on Tuesday, HarperCollins said it would stop selling the book. "The book, which has reached the end of its natural sales cycle, will no longer be offered for purchase until such time as the author has the opportunity to source and revise the material," according to the statement from HarperCollins.

Crowley, a syndicated radio host, columnist, and, until recently, a Fox News contributor, will serve as Trump’s senior director of strategic communications for the National Security Council.

Trump Pick Monica Crowley Plagiarized Parts of Her Ph.D. Dissertation

Monica Crowley, President-Elect Donald J. Trump’s pick for a top National Security Council job, plagiarized numerous passages in her Ph.D. dissertation, Politico Magazine has found.

An examination of the dissertation and the sources it cites identified more than a dozen sections of text that have been lifted, with little to no changes, from other scholarly works without proper attribution. In some instances, Crowley footnoted her source but did not identify with quotation marks the text she was copying directly. In other instances, she copied text or heavily paraphrased with no attribution at all.

This finding comes on the heels of CNN’s Saturday report that Crowley, the conservative author and commentator whom Trump tapped as senior director of strategic communications for the National Security Council, plagiarized more than 50 passages in her 2012 book What the (Bleep) Just Happened, copying directly from conservative columns, news articles, Wikipedia and in one case a podiatrist’s website.

They love it. They cannot avoid it like moths to the flame. They say AOC is a monster the Democratic Party will not be able to control when they first unleashed the Tea Party which basically split the Republican Party in two, then kicked out any "moderates". They they embraced people more extreme than the Tea Party, the Freedom Caucus people who finished the job of the Tea baggers. Then they nominated Trump who blew off any veneer left.

AOC is active and is pushing hard. Pelosi doesn't seem to be trying too hard to "control" her. Certainly some of her colleagues do not like the attention and yes, she can stand to focus her message on what she wants to do and not berate Democratic colleagues who aren't ready to move at such a quick pace. She is not however, some monster that needs to be controlled. She is saying fairly standard progressive things. It is the media that is saying how "radical" she is. They like the conflict and they will continue to manufacture it.

Republicans need some serious therapy to deal with their deep psychological problems so that they can stop projecting.

You “hit the nail on the head” on that. OMG, the Congressional Freedom Caucus is not about freedom. They should be called the Anti-freedom caucus.” They’re anti everything it seems. Womens right to choose? No way! LGBTQ rights? Again, no way. The freedom to use cannabis? Sorry, that’s a freedom they don’t believe in. 😳🤪

It doesn't refer to a person being more important than they have a right to be. It refers to the envy of people that motivates them to cut the person down. Tall Poppy Syndrome isn't criticizing the achiever; it's describing the jealousy & resentment the crowd has for the achiever.

If they weren't afraid of her, they wouldn't be going after her the way they are. They're terrified of her the way they are of Nancy Pelosi. AOC is their next-generation boogeyman. I find it entertaining, as these are the same bullshit tactics they used to try to turn Dems against Pelosi. It didn't work. It won't work with AOC, either.

Is it someone who is full of life, love, intelligence, drive, and happiness - and shares these qualities with others?

Or is it someone who separates children from parents, turns away refugees fleeing from violence, forces hundreds of thousands into slavery, denigrates and insults those who disagree with his latest whim, and conspires with enemies?

We all know who the monster is.

full of people. There ARE NO MORE JOB OPENINGS AT FAUX NEWS!! Please pass the news along to your fellow rightwing nuts.

Eventually advertisers are going to figure out that a surplus exists in the rabid rightwing nut job markets, and thus salaries, advertising revenues, and so forth, will go down.

All of these commentators will then have to fight for ratings, advertising dollars and thus will try to outdo each other in the 'shock' impact of 'their' news, muddling the waters even more and adding to the general swampy atmosphere that exists in Wash DC in rump's admin. Will hurt them ALL in the chaos to come.
