YouTube and Covington Catholic High School - The Leavings

Well, the school has pulled many, many incriminating videos from its YouTube presence. All of the ones from yesterday showing students in blackface in the stands at a basketball game are gone, as are a number of others with similar images.

However, there's one they missed. It's a Welcome to Covington Catholic video from three years ago. It's a series of short clips showing various aspects of Covington Catholic High School. At 0:58 into the video, up pop a couple more fans in blackface at a basketball game. They're only on the screen for a second or two. Once again, we see the true face of Covington:

The School is trying to whitewash all of this stuff, but it can be found within other videos that have not been thoroughly screened.

It’s a “blackout”

For anyone that’s paid any attention to sports for at least the last two decades, it’s known that this is NOT blackface

Just stop

3. Not a stretch to assume they're using blackout as an excuse to wear blackface.

You've met racists before, right? This is what they do.

The school is working hard to get rid of all videos showing that phenomenon. Why is that, do you suppose?

This is largely a distraction

We could point to 1,000 occurrences daily and get outraged 1,000 times over but it doesn’t mean shit when one political party is exacting metaphorical murder on our democracy and putting our republic in genuine peril

I'm outraged by many things. This is just one of them. Trump is another. Mitch McConnell is yet another. I am perfectly capable of being outraged over multiple issues at one time. It's how things are right now. There is a connection between all of those things, if you are able to see it. If you are not, there is no way for me to convince you of that.

So I googled it.

In 2015 ASU asked fans to not paint faces
[link:https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/tempe/breaking/2015/10/05/asu-fans-face-paint-blackout-blackface-football/73424936/|]

In 2018 it was controversial in a Minnesota high school game
[link:https://www.google.com/amp/s/usatodayhss.com/2018/minn-students-wear-blackface-at-football-game-sparking-larger-racism-conversation/amp|]

And one more from 2011 at University of Colorado

This old white man is surprised but not shocked this still goes on. Seriously are there some guidelines you follow that somehow make this ok? Like you can wear black face during the game within 500 yards of the stadium but it becomes racist beyond that?

I don’t understand the controversy. The practice should end.

I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that you were saying something about whether the practice is unusual. Unfortunately maybe it isn’t.

The students at the protest were 1) NOT shouting racial slurs and 2) were being confronted by Phillips, not the other way around. That should be the end of this whole thing.

Wearing face paint at blackout games is not the same thing as wearing blackface in the minstrelsy sense. It's also not something that is exclusive to "white supremist" bastions like Covington. Here's Arizona State a couple years ago dealing with their own "blackface" panic because of blackout games:

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/oct/06/arizona-state-urges-fans-to-eschew-blackface-for-annual-blackout-game

Trolling through years-old videos frame by frame for signs of racist body language from anyone in the student body is borderline deranged.

Blackout has been controversial, long been problematic no matter the spin put on it. It is not an innocent act. The boys harassed girls prior to the incident, wore MAGA hats, were at a “March for Life” —already primed for bigotry, and responded to a very small group of half crazy black men in numbers.

They are racist little shits. Probably some are the kind that don’t know or understand they are racist, because it’s all they know.

I don't think the kid in the video was putting on blackface. He was doing what the people who wear green body suits (and sometimes other colors) do at sporting events.
