For years, I've been tolerating some long distance relatives who are vocally republican. They send me all kinds of anti Obama, Hillary, whatever on a regular basis. I amused myself by proving their false claims wrong. Light political banter. In the past week, three of them attacked me, told me not to contact them again and generally dissed me. Another told me I have no sense of humor. My retorts weren't any different than those I did through the years. Not nasty nor belittling to them personally. Just humorous, I thought. What do you think is happening with these folks? Sad I'm losing some old FB folks, but I'm happier without them.

(10,252 posts)And in doing so, you exposed that the idol that they set up on a pedestal has feet of clay. They hold their egos as real self-existent entities, rather than the fabricated non-existant myths that they are. How dare you bust their balloons! They cannot admit that they were wrong. We Buddhists know that "self" is empty, non-existent.
Trumpsters have so much of their egos invested in Trump, pro-Republican, anti-liberal. It is a cult. People like that cannot be persuaded by logic and reason. They only see the light through their great suffering at the consequences of Trump and Republican policies - if even then.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. I'm sorry that you've lost old friends and relatives.

(50,932 posts)I would expect that they will either go into a depression or double down on their trumpiness until his presidency absolutely implodes when they will become quiet but continue to hold the same beliefs.
But this was a bad week for them. And a good one for the country.

If the implosion is awful enough, it will be difficult to find anyone who will admit voting for the Trumpenstein Monster.
I'm already seeing a change in topics occurring in some of the Reich-wing haunts I'm forced to endure.
If only it were to get bad enough for them to see the fraud of the so-called Republican Party (Trump Cult) for what it is and throw all of them out of office, but, that's probably wishing in the wind. They will always vote for anyone with an R behind their name, even with the evidence of the past two years.

(61,690 posts)They are getting defensive because mf45 is looking even more incompetent and more like a treason-weasel. They cannot defend that and claim to be patriotic citizens.
They are pissed that you were right all along.
Bravo!

(33,100 posts)It helps me to relax.
When I first started I was pulling the loops way too tight! Yes, there was some pent up aggression there.
You've inspired me to maybe listen to some audio books while I putter.

(61,690 posts)Cozy mysteries on Bookbub. Mild enough that it won't keep you up at night. There is stuff you can download for free. Some is decently written, but not going to get any book awards. Many genres are available. Helps me fall asleep.
I subscribe to Amazon Prime and their unlimited reading program, so lots of $3-5 downloads are free for me.
I crochet, too, but it frequently leaves me thinking about politics too much while my hands are busy.

Especially, during the summer. I imagine sitting under an afgan crochet project, while nice during the winter, can get hot.

(61,585 posts)As long as they believed that Trump really was a strong leader who is MAGA, they tolerated your comments, content in the knowledge that they were right and you were wrong.
This week, their Dear Leader was exposed as a weakling and that threatens to demolish the entire case for Trump. If he's weak, then everything he says might be a lie and he might fail and.... the sky is falling.
Don't expect them to be pleasant or tolerant while they're going through this rude awakening. Something might happen to allow them to settle back into their comfortable cocoon, in which case they'll go back to the way they acted before. But otherwise, their psyches are in for some discomfort.
I'm not a mental health expert by any means. Just lived long enough to see this happen. I expect to see a lot of grumpy MAGATs in the months ahead.

(5,499 posts)I worked with this guy who was so convinced that Obama was going to start a door to door gun confiscation program that he was almost in tears. He really believed it. This was right after the 2008 election. I told him he and his guns would be just fine.
Deep into Obama's second term I had to go to him for something and after we did our work talk, I said, "you've still got your guns, right?" OMG, he went on this anti-obama rant blah, blah, blah. Again, he was so into this bullshit that he was near tears.
And I've seen that same pattern in others. They love to dish it out but the can't take it.
I think when your world view is based on fear and hate, you have little room for irony.

(5,221 posts)One anti Obama neighbor filled his basement with bullets he's purchased. Thousands of them. He was convinced Obama would stop allowing the sale of bullets! Unfortunately, his widow is now faced with emptying out the basement of bullets. Life is too short to obsess on the negative.

(58,618 posts)"The Last Temptation of Christ" hit the theaters. When true diehards are exposed to an alternate reality or set of facts, their natural reaction is angry denial and pushback.
True believers cannot allow an alternate set of ideas exist, they don't have the strength of character for it.

So they berated me for swearing.
Then I again told them to fuck off and to take their phony religious beliefs and shove them up their ass.
Have not heard from them since.
