North Carolina 3-year-old Casey Hathaway says he hung out with a bear after he vanished ...

The North Carolina 3-year-old who vanished from his grandmother’s backyard earlier this week said he spent his two days in the woods with a friendly bear. Casey Lynn Hathaway had been missing since Tuesday, when he didn’t come inside with the other children he’d been playing with at his grandmothers house in Enrul, located about 100 miles southeast of Raleigh.

Casey’s aunt, Breanna Hathaway in a Facebook post said her nephew was “healthy, smiling and talking” following his return late Thursday. “He said he hung out with a bear for two days,” she wrote. “God sent him a friend to keep him safe. God is a good God. Miracles do happen.”

“This little one was lost in the woods for days in the freezing temperatures, rain, dark nights and wind. He told us that his best friend the bear was with him to keep him safe. Thanks to God’s mercy he came home to us alive and well.”

The toddler told a similar tale to law enforcement, who are still unsure how Casey remained mostly healthy in the woods for two day without food or water. “He didn’t say how he was able to survive and all that,” Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes told WCTI. “He did say he had a friend in the woods that was a bear that was with him.”

Doctors at Carolina East Medical Center spent Thursday night examining Casey, who was left mostly uninjured from his time in the woods aside from a few scrapes and bruises.

Years ago, when I was volunteering at an animal shelter, we took in a huge dog, larger than I was. She did look a little like a bear. But she was the sweetest dog I have ever known, and one of the sweetest beings who ever lived. Whenever I went in to take care of her cage, she whimpered to me sweetly and tiptoed around me, obviously crooning, "Don't be afraid, little human; I will be ever so careful to never, never hurt you." It was so sad that she was there and had been surrendered to an animal shelter. However, there was a happy ending, as I came in one Sunday to discover that she had been adopted by a kindly couple who owned a farm. I can easily see her doing something such as this child has described.

When we got him from the shelter and were trying to figure out a name, Little Bear was the only thing that fit because that's what he looks like!

for or test for a presence of a bear? It seems to me that this would be a relatively easy thing to do.

Glad he is home safe, but a fantasy being (god) had nothing to do with his being found.

Edit: On second thought, it was a mythical creature...Casey was taken care of and brought home by Bigfoot.

That story would look a little different...

"Yes God is so so good. He keeps us safe by sending us multiple personalities to help us contend with stress when we're lost in the woods. Hallelujah!"

Thankfully it hasn't generated much interest and has only raised $300 out of a requested $1500. But why request any money at all? They found the child unharmed.

I grew up not too far from there, and there really are bears in that area. Mostly they keep to themselves; you mostly see them when the mothers have cubs with them or when the young adult males are migrating to new territories. The ones around our farms were generally not aggressive. Not sure how they would respond to a child. Still much more likely to have been a dog.
