Sometimes it's fascinating to watch the number of views garnered by particular threads

You'll see folks respond to their initial OP for upwards of a week to keep the thing near the top.
This has an effect of getting more views and more posts, which skews the average lifecycle of an OP.

Most threads with high view counts also have high counts on the number of replies, but when you look at the thread, many of the replies are by the same people, including the OP, who is replying to the replies.
My personal rule is to stop replying in my own threads after the day it was posted.

Most sites prevent the same IP from registering more than once.
Once the thread hits certain view milestones, it's raised to the top again. Once there are a lot of views, it hits the Most Active thread and then it gets visibility where others want to check out what's going on. It becomes almost self-sustaining at that point.
