GOP moves to block anyone from running a 2020 primary challenge against Trump
Who needs democracy when you have Trump?

Amidst collapsing poll numbers and an unmitigated defeat in his standoff with House Democrats, one contingent still has President Donald Trumps back: the Republican National Committee (RNC), which is planning to stonewall any efforts from potential GOP challengers for the 2020 nomination.
As ABC reported, the RNC passed a resolution on Friday that threw their undivided support behind the president as he gears up for the 2020 race a resolution that effectively undercut any other Republicans thinking of running. And the RNC passed this resolution as state Republican parties are considering even more drastic moves to immunize Trump from a primary challenger in 2020.
Trump reacted with effusive thanks, praising the RNC for its decision.

(1,124 posts)This is their own suicide pact. OR are they just playing to his ego knowing that he will not be running again because he will be removed from office?

(8,224 posts)replacing him is an admission of utter defeat. Odds are looking good that they will lose either way. Admitting defeat by replacing Trump would probably wash them out of the Senate too. I expect this is what they are thinking of. They may well be better off losing with Trump than losing with somebody else.

(4,012 posts)...the scene where the Russian sub commander fires on and misses the Red October, and then takes off the safeties on his torpedo, and fires again only to have his own torpedo circle back and kill himself along with his entire crew?
Remember the line the crew member delivers right as the torpedo is about to impact the sub: "You've killed us all You Ass!"?
I have a feeling we will hear that from inside the bowels of the GOP at some point in the near future.

(14,286 posts)Although the RNC statement was effusive and passed unanimously, it does NOT say anything about canceling the primary or supporting only Trump in 2020:

See? It says it supports Trumps presidency, not re-election.

(3,145 posts)My biggest fear would be the 2020 Dem nominee facing a so-called "reasonable" republican such as John Kasich who can put on enough of a good guy, middle of the road front to woo indie voters.

(31,941 posts)Why do you think the MSM has not discovered this secret? Only a couple sites on the internet have! Primaries are being eliminated and the MSM does not even know! Wow, the state of journalism now!!!
If someone wants to run they will need to meet the requirements to get on the state ballots just as they always have. Very rarely are incumbent presidents challenged within their own party. The last time anyone serious tried was in 1980 with Kennedy going against Carter and we all know what happened there. When was the last successful challenge to an incumbent president from within their party?

(1,345 posts)but ThinkProgress is a partisan site, and it links to MSM links which are straight-news. They say the move "discourages" other candidates from running.

(31,941 posts)But realistically no one substantial ever runs against an incumbent president of their own party. Who ran against Obama in 2012 or Clinton in 1996? No one. And it was not because they were super popular in those years. Obama's re-elect numbers in 2011 were similar to Trump's now. Its just that it is very difficult to get rank and file party members to dislodge an incumbent president.
We may see someone try against Trump because of his peculiar circumstances. But the party national committee always belongs to an incumbent president just as the DNC belonged to Obama and Clinton while they were in.
