Sanders targets black voters in South Carolina

By BEATRICE PETERSON Jan 27, 2019, 8:11 AM ET

Sen. Bernie Sanders' visit to South Carolina -– a state where African-Americans make up nearly 30 percent of the population –- was a signal to some in the Palmetto State that he intends to target black voters.

In speeches at churches, community centers and colleges, Sanders reminded voters repeatedly about his civil rights upbringing, having marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the March on Washington as a college student.

“What he’s doing in South Carolina points to what his strategy is in terms of he has to make inroads in the core Democratic constituency,” said J. Michael Bitzer a professor of politics and history at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina. Bitzer, who has studied southern politics extensively, said when it comes to race “you cannot divorce race from politics in the South.”

According to exit polls in the state, Sanders won roughly 14 percent of black voters in South Carolina. Hillary Clinton, however, won 86 percent of the black vote in the state.

Bernie loves the attention, he needs to sit this one out. If our party lets this independent run as a Democrat again I will scream bloody murder.

Stealing votes from the Democratic candidate?

I did support him in the 2018 primary.

Now I just wish he would go back to the Senate and get off his blind ego trip.

Tell me it ain't so.

In speeches at churches, community centers and colleges, Sanders reminded voters repeatedly about his civil rights upbringing, having marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the March on Washington as a college student.

Not claiming to be a major influencer, but I don't hear anyone talking about supporting Sanders next year. Haven't really even heard anyone talking about Sanders at all.
I think the Biden vs newcomers is the main discussion. Harris, Booker and Warren will all get a lot of attention, but my guess is that Biden/Harris would be the race if a primary were held today.

All of this is assuming that Clyburn sticks to his position of not endorsing anyone in the state.
Here's an earlier post about our Congressman, the Majority Whip:

Well, some are, of course, just like the rest of the population. But as a demographic, they can and will listen and read what a candidate has said and done (and not done) in the past. Sanders' comments about POC aren't going away.
