Navigating politics with friends on Facebook

Henrich Ellison is moments away from "unfriending" his cousin on Facebook.

Ellison, a 32-year-old telemarketer from Orlando, is a Democrat, and his cousin is a Republican. Though he doesn't mind the party differences, he's grown tired of the negative images and comments his cousin posts about President Barack Obama and the party platform.

"I never really share my political views on Facebook, and I don't mind that she shares hers, but now she's in high gear, and [the posts] are getting uglier," Ellison said. "I think I've tolerated it for as long as I can."

A tidal wave of political content is flooding Facebook users' news feeds as Election Day approaches, and many users are scrambling for ways to navigate through it. Should users block or unfriend a family member, co-worker or close friend and risk triggering an uncomfortable conversation? Or is there a less-stressful substitute?

Most of my husbands family is anti Obama and if they found I was a Dem it wouldn't go over well at all. HS friends if they post anti Obama crap, it gets hidden or I unsubscribe from their posts or unfriend.

If they post any teabagger crap they will be immediately unfriended and I have. I had to cut loose a woman I have known since 1st grade because she kept posting hateful, right wing crap. Life is too damn short, lol.

My brother and mother are my FB politics nemeses... the sad part is my mother used to be a sane Democrat, but has always been against abortion as a Catholic and has now been sucked into the FOX News cesspool. Yesterday she posted some selective economic stats to argue that the economy is worse today than when Obama took office (seriously!?!?!?) and tonight posted "Shame on you, Carolyn Kennedy! My heart is breaking..."

My brother actually subscribes to the John Birch Society rag and is the king of slippery, insincere debate (the kind of guy who spouts Republican talking points, then disavows any affinity for the party, claiming allegiance to the Constitution Party or Libertarians according to whim). When I rebutted my mom's economic stats he jumped in; I declared victory by Godwin's Law when he made a reference to Obama's "brownshirts" - and he didn't seem even to notice that he'd done this, which shows how readily that kind of insane comparison comes to him.

Pretty much everyone else in my family is a good Democrat, as we all were before exploitation of Roe v. Wade by the right led many Catholics to believe they needed to become single issue voters.

Although Romney's true personal convictions are impossible to discern, it's surely the case that if your chief goal is to limit access to legal abortion Romney/Ryan is the ticket you should support. After all, what kind of Supreme Court justices will the respective candidates nominate? Who will cut funding for reproductive health services? All the RWers pretty much know Romney is a hypocrite and have made their peace with it.

From her perspective, even if Romney waffles, Ryan will keep him on the straight and narrow...

This isn't for everyone... but I'm thinking now that I might declare a moratorium on political FB posts, coupled with a pledge to donate a buck or two to Obama every time a FB friend of mine delivers a RW post or "like"

I even warn people who request to be friends that I am and I will not be silent. A few long lost people in my life have reappeared and I warned them before I agreed to their request. It is only fair that they know. One has unfriended me, but that is their loss.

I think of my comments to the hate as a way of reaching people who are not so gung-ho as the one who posted it. There are many other people on that person's friend list besides them, and I want to counter the lies with facts for those who might listen.
