From Thom Hartmann, on my FB feed this morning:

Moscow Mitch Set To Kill Lady Liberty

The single most important defining characteristic of an authoritarian dictatorship is that the authoritarian leader uses the power of the state to maintain his own personal power. This is something that “divided government“ – three separate branches of government that are coequal – was designed to prevent. With Mitch McConnell promoting Dershowitz’s idea that a president can commit any kind of crime he wants so long as it gets him reelected because he “believes his reelection is in the public interest,“ we are about to see our American democratic republic transformed into an oligarchic semi-dictatorship. This is exactly what the Founders warned us against, and may well be the death-knell of not only our democracy, but of democracy around the world.

If the White House can ban Bolton's book, they'll ban all others too. Trump always says "failing NY Times" and complains about the Post. And Time won't put him on their cover, so they'll be circling the drain soon.

The USSR had Pravda. We'll be stuck with the National Enquirer.

Worse than:
the electoral college.
the fugitive slave act(cross references with the 'war on terror').
the "great compromises" of the pre-civil war era.
the not-so great-compromises of the reconstruction.
the enacted-repealed-reenacted-unrepealable tax so we can show our true colors in all the profitable wars.

All examples of long term "solutions" to hide short term problems.
Gut legislation for the fearful, designed by the powerful and approved by the stupid.

And don't forget:
the hugest military budget in the history of time vs the highest health care costs of all developed nations.

So where does one start cleaning up this mess? top to bottom? left to right?

a train racing down the tracks headed for you — while we’re stuck in the car on the tracks.

So it is here and there doesn’t seem to be much we can do about it.

I can’t believe I just wrote that but it seems to be where we are.

I don’t know what to think any more. 😢

I feel the same way. I have to flip channels when the pin head lawyer for Trump spews his lies.

Hopefully we can overcome the election fraud and vote the bastards out of office.

Especially, if you are in a red or purple area - use your landline if you have one. Call your Democratic Senator, too, and give them support in the impeachment fight to maintain our democratic separation of powers. Mention that dershowitz is fool out to excuse dictatorial presidential powers. Ask for documents and witnesses - that at least Bolton should testify.

on the foot.

When trump is crowned king he will not need any of the republican senators, at least most of them, why would he? He can do anything he wants, he doesn't need the votes, he doesn't need anything from them anymore so their use will be over and so their careers.

They don't seem to understand they are working against themselves as well.

"And what have we got, a Cuisinart?" Moscow Mitch triumphs only if we let him.
We see now that the Republican Party is now the party of oligarchs and wannabe dictators. They have rendered themselves inert. irrelevant and useless. But we still have the vote. That, they haven't taken away yet.
The objective is obvious and the mission clear: To purge every Republican out of office at every level and restore the rule of law.
It will take time and much effort, much as any reclamation and rehabilitation project would. But to surrender to hopelessness and helplessness is unacceptable and patently un American.
Every generation faces it's greatest test in the defense of the Republic. This is ours now and failure is not an option. Especially if the opponent is an overweight man-baby armed only with a Twitter account. This is not the might of the Wehrmacht nor the Warsaw Pact. Our outrage should be palpable and our energies focused.
We have a democracy to save.

while I was grocery shopping. I always leave my home radio on to keep the cat company while I'm out.

So the voice of Dershowitz greeted me when I opened my door on returning. I could not believe what I was hearing. The most insane "defense" argument in a mock trial full of insanity.

If a candidate believes he/she is the best person for the country (don't they all?), then any crime they commit toward winning an election is not really a crime.

What planet is Dershowitz from?

The scary part is that such a "defense," when accepted by Trumpers, means that any crime they commit in the name of supporting him is not really a crime. Rigging votes, beating up or threatening supporters of other candidates, threatening the lives of other candidates, and whatever else people do in aiding a coup is all justified by the belief that they alone are right.
