I believe this is the biggest miscalculation the Republicans are making.

I think they do not believe or even consider what they are doing will lead to a catastrophic event taking place. They are only concerned about the moment and how best to protect their seats. They are not concerned about the general election, yet. They are only concerned about what is happening today.

They know Trump is unstable, corrupt and dangerous. However they don't see him as a major threat to the nation. I believe they think they can keep him in check until the election. Some of them may secretly hope Trump loses the election.

This is a very dangerous path they are taking and it is based on fear, fear of Trump, the base, fear of losing their seats and fear of a major investigation many of them could be dragged into.

The Republicans are risking everything by committing the biggest cover up in history. This puts the constitution, our democracy at great risk. If something horrible happens after they acquit Trump, they will pay a heavy price, we all will.

Since it will be entirely rigged and there will be nothing anyone can do about. Who knows. Maybe there won’t be an election at all. After this sham trial, Trump can just name himself ruler for life and Dershowitz would cream his undies.

.... can't/won't see past their myopic noses.

They have succumbed to being short-sighted "day traders" and so utterly transactional-on-the-grift in their "governing patterns" that we have a million reason to be suspicious of their malfeasance.

Yes, for sure, this will become the year/era of countless investigations into these compromised crooks. They're BEGGING for it.

Maybe in one of Teri Kanefield's great twitter threads....

Made sense to me: GOP (read: white male plutocrats) know their time of supremacy is coming to an end. I presume this is about the browning of America.

So this is in fact a last ditch effort to hold onto power. At any cost.

No souls. Traitors.

The white supremacy party is becoming so obsolete that election cheating, especially with foreign help, is their last gasp at holding on to power.

They are behaving like people who know they won't have to face any consequences from the voters. It's terrifying. I'm not so sure we will retake the senate at this point, not because the will to vote them out isn't there, but that our voting system is so broken and exploited that we cannot have free and fair elections in this country anymore.

I think we're living in the last days of the American Republic.

75% of voters want a fair trial with witnesses, the Reps care not one bit. They have either taken control of the voting machines or they know Trump will use the full power of the government to get only Reps elected.

Something big is going down.

These are the actions of men who have nothing to fear. Moscow Mitch and his Senate lackeys refused to pass any of the bills put forward by the House to protect our elections. They willfully ignored all the warnings of National Security experts (who unsurprisingly have all been fired or “allowed” to resign).

Putin will once again steal our election; Senate races included. I just pray millions of Americans take to the streets when it happens. Otherwise, we might as well change our country’s name to The United States of Russia and accept our fates like good little lemmings.

just running the Clock hopping they will retain their Seats in Congress and the Orange Anus fades into the background.

They know damn well the Voters are on to them and in order to try to keep their Seats, they will have to work the Election system which seems to be the Game Plan. They know Trump is toast.

They know McTurtle bluffed Obama to stay out of 2016 and allowed Donnie to get close enough to steal it with Pootie's help.

If they can hold enough of their base together and the GOP shields him from responsibility for the terrors to come following this Jim Crow impeachment (they know he's guilty, but it's rigged), they could change the underlying structure of the government enough to cement their power for generations.

The feudal structure they're building will create a dystopian world to rival Orwell.

It looks like they are waiting for the "medical issue" to result in his resignation so they wont have to vote against him.

Whether you guys want to believe it or not, the GOP does not want Trump as the 2020 candidate. They also don't want to lose their individual seats. They know he has to go, but don't want to remove him. None of the Republicans believe the bullshit they are spouting. Its all tribalism coupled with self-preservation at this point. Nothing has changed in 3 years; they didn't want him then, and they don't want him now.

i assume the senators (or their campaign staffs) are not wrong about this. many Republican senators would be voted out for supporting witnesses, let alone removal.

this speaks volumes about their constituencies. and therein lies the heart of our problem.

the American electorate has been poisoned. over the last 4 decades, the poison has accumulated, and now we face a crisis at the heart of democracy itself.
